New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), a Hispanic Serving Institution in Northern New Mexico, seeks a student-centered, visionary leader with an innovative spirit for the position of Dean of the Arts & Sciences. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College leading faculty and staff to include hiring, recommendation for reappointments, promotion and tenure, post-tenure review, and annual evaluations. The Dean ensures the integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement of new and current academic programs and services, builds and maintains relationships with the community, promotes student success and satisfaction, engages in fund/friend-raising, supports increasing enrollment and retention of students, manages fiscal and other resources. The position will also lead development of new, and enhancement of existing academic programs that promote professional development, faculty research, and other scholarly activities. Responsibilities include leading the development, evaluation, and administration of the college curriculum on all campuses and online. The successful candidate will have the experience and skills to advance the College of Arts & Sciences
The Dean reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Provost Council and Deans Council.

Duties and Responsibilities
Provide Leadership to the College of Arts & Sciences including strategic planning and analysis;
Provide leadership in the recruitment of faculty ;
Oversee personnel matters involving academic and non-academic employees within the College of Arts & Sciences including recruiting qualified candidates, and conducting personnel evaluations within the Collective Bargaining Agreement;
Make recommendations to the Provost regarding personnel appointments and re-appointments, promotions, and dismissal if necessary;
Provide the Provost with monthly reports, reports for the Board of Regents, and annual reviews of staff;
Overseas and manages faculty workload plans;
Articulate budgetary needs of the College and manage the allocation and expenditure of resources;
Represent the University and the College of Arts & Sciences in recruiting efforts and attend various academic and social functions both on and off campus;
Promote interdisciplinary collaboration, cooperation, and scholarly activity;
Promote, support, and work with faculty in the development of programming for post-traditional and distance students;
Develop annual goals and objectives, guiding the activities of the College of Arts & Sciences;
Support the departments with relevant professional associations as well as state and national regulatory or accrediting agencies;
In collaboration with the Provost, serve to support the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation efforts to include compiling data and preparing accreditation documents;
Coordinate and oversee the assessment and development of academic programs;
Support University-wide assessment of key general education outcomes;
Supports the departments in submission of grant applications and / or prepare proposals for outside funding of projects;
Participate as a member or chair academic or campus-wide committees as appointed by the Provost or voted on by faculty;
Collaborate with chairs on the development of course schedules and student registration processes;
Maintain good working relationships with faculty and administration in all academic and non-academic sectors;
Communicate effectively with constituents within the University, surrounding community, State, and nationally regarding the University;
Attend conferences and seminars to inform the campus community of teaching, learning, and advising trends and concepts;
Maintain regular on ground presence in Las Vegas;
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Provost;

Minimum Job Requirements
EDUCATION: A terminal degree in one of the academic disciplines within the College of Arts & Sciences from a regionally accredited institution.
Must have held the rank of professor with tenure.
EXPERIENCE: Holds the rank of professor or equivalent academic experience. Possess a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service; administrative experience in higher education; or national recognition in the applicant's field of expertise and administrative experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with higher education administration over a five-year period;
Experience and knowledge of post-traditional and distance student needs;
Outstanding record of academic leadership;
Community engagement and fundraising experience;
Demonstrated record of commitment to excellence in teaching and research;
Demonstrated achievement in the promotion of diversity, affirmative action and Equal Opportunity;
Evidence of instituting programs that improve retention/graduation/enrollment; experience with developmental education issues; and experience with distance delivery programs.
Skill and experience with collective bargaining environments;

Special Conditions for Eligibility

The Dean is expected to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and other campus and external state and local constituents. The Dean is also expected to live in the Las Vegas, NM area and be available for campus emergencies.

Familiarity with and commitment to accreditation and assessment of student learning outcomes;
Ability to teach graduate level courses;
Ability to supervise graduate student research;
Ability to supervise graduate internships.
