Plant Operator


Job Details

We are currently seeking a Plant Operator for a stationary position in Potomac, MD. The Plant Operator will be responsible for the central plant and HVAC equipment within the campus.



Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all mechanical plant which includes chillers, cooling towers, pumps, clean steam, humidification and dehumidification systems, air handling systems, cool rooms, potable water filtration, building management and control systems, generators, and other related equipment.

  • Utilize our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to receive, track and create work orders, and manage parts inventory.

  • Assist the Electrician, Plumber, and Auto Mechanic in performing scheduled (preventive) maintenance and repairs.

  • Install, maintain, and repair equipment and machinery, which may include some fabrication.

  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment common to various skilled trades.

  • Assist in the coordination, supervision and monitoring of work performed by outside contractors.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.

  • Ability to work independently without supervision.

  • Develop a strong sense of responsibility for the safe, efficient, and accurate operation of all systems.

  • Operate a variety of light and medium equipment as necessary (with training) such as forklift, Bobcat, and elevated work platforms.

  • Perform routine inspection of all designated environmental systems and areas and make recommendations for any repairs or adjustments identified during these inspections.

  • Order and purchase equipment and supplies.

  • Manage various projects with specific deadlines that may require extended hours.

  • Able and willing to work a flexible schedule. Some evening, weekend and holiday work will be required.

  • Participate in a rotating "on call " schedule (7-day schedule) to respond to after-hours emergencies.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Required Skills & Experience


  • COVID-19 vaccination and up to date on all boosters.

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Experience and knowledge of the HVAC profession equivalent to 8 years of experience in the trade.

  • Able to read technical and architectural plans.

  • Able to work effectively without supervision.

  • Able to complete required professional training, including but not limited to, Confined Space, Fall Protection, CPR, Hot Work, and Lock Out/Tag Out.

  • Proficient in personal computer and/or tablet operation including associate software, including Microsoft Office and CMMS application.


Licenses and Certification


  • Valid motor vehicle driver's license.

  • Universal EPA refrigeration certificate.

  • Journeyman or Master HVAC-R license
