Job Details

Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking applicants for Bus Aides. This position is Part-time, 188 days, 5 hours/day, eligible for benefits. This position is on RCPS Pay Plan Grade 109.

Position Description/Job Summary :

The Bus Aide assists in the safe and pleasant transportation of children enrolled in the program, under the direct supervision of the bus driver.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks :

  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from the program or vehicles used by the program
  • Helping children board the bus safely and preparing for departure (putting on coats and assuring that each child has his/her own belongings)
  • Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle
  • Helping children safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them
  • Follows and ensures mandated child restraint devise procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained
  • In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adults passengers (following the Bus Evacuation Plan)
  • Assists in completing accident reports, when appropriate.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and trainings, as requested.
  • Oversees children's medicines if necessary with approved/required training.
  • Assists in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean condition.
  • Assures that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

18 years of age

Have personal or professional experience with basic childcare.

Be able to comply with a background check as required.

Have good verbal communication skills and visual ability to observe children.

Be able to fulfill responsibilities under pressure, including during emergencies.
