Position Summary

The Social Service Assistant is responsible for assisting the Social Service Coordinator in the organization, preparation, and execution of social service programming and activities. Additionally, they are to support the collection and purchase of food as well as assisting in maintaining social service inventories, cleaning and organization of social service products and equipment, and working with volunteers and staff as needed.3

Pay Range

$17.00/hr. - $18.00/hr.

Essential Functions

DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES: (not listed in order of priority)

  • Complies with established sanitation standards, personal hygiene and health standards. Observes proper receiving, storing, recording and handling techniques for food and social service products.
  • Stores food properly and safely, marking the date and item.
  • Reports necessary equipment repair and maintenance to supervisor.
  • Apportions food for clients and distribution.
  • Maintains daily production and client records.
  • Engages clients with good customer service.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean at all times and ensures clean area before leaving for the day.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment used in social services.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions from personnel, visitors, agencies, staff, members, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs and training related to the position.
  • All other duties as assigned in relation to the position and work environment.


Working Conditions

The employee is required to sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.

This job operates in a social service environment which includes walk-in freezer and refrigerators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in related field preferred.
  • Must be a certified food handler under the California Safety Code 97-0071.
  • Ability to understand written information and keep accurate stats/inventory.
  • Must be TB cleared upon hire date.
  • Microsoft Office applications and excel a plus.
  • Ability to place orders and calculate inventories for production.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Must have work experience in social service or market-based environments.
  • Ability to carry out assignments independently, maintain good rapport and communication with other staff members, clients, and the public.
  • Education or experience working with the homeless population.
  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with Homeless individuals.
  • Strong work ethic, personable, dependable and must be efficient.
  • Must be able to work any shift and a signed schedule.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
