Job Duties

This is a Wage position at our State Farm Correctional Complex in Goochland, VA. Contributes to the agency's mission to provide the most efficient and modern Agribusiness operation possible while maintaining inmate custody and public safety at State Farm Agribusiness Operations. The State Farm Agribusiness Operation consist of a 500 cow/calf beef cattle herd, 200 head dairy cattle herd, 2500 acres of crop production, 20 acres of vegetable production, and 2 production greenhouses. The purpose of this position is to ensure modern agricultural and mechanical techniques are being implemented to ensure efficient operations and to provide training opportunities for the inmate population.

Positions provide inmate instruction and supervision in quality agricultural services, which include Garage, Crops, Dairy, and Beef Cattle Units while maintaining inmate custody and public safety. Assists other Agribusiness operations as needed. Duties could include, but are not limited to, driving commercial vehicles on a delivery route, supervising inmates working on the farm or in one of the production sites, operating farm equipment.

These positions are part of the DOC Agribusiness program designed to provide training for inmates while lowering the inmate food costs for the Agency. As part of the Re-entry Program, this training provides tangible skills to inmates that prepare them for a successful return to the workforce and society.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 - April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Working knowledge of farm operation and agriculture production. Demonstrated ability to follow directions and supervise inmates. Skilled in teamwork.

Additional Considerations

Advanced knowledge of crop/greenhouse production, dairy, beef cattle production and/or equipment maintenance. Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics, landscaping, carpentry and/or welding. Demonstrated experience in personnel management.
