Research Communications Intern

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

WySCI is a grassroots, campus-wide initiative which envisions a campus community that values, supports, and creates effective science communication and engagement.

With WySCI, people at any career stage/position within the UW community can: (1) Get consulting support for developing grants, particularly the broader impacts/research impacts in society components. (2) Get training to enhance your skills and knowledge. (3) Collaborate on/contribute funding or administrative support to research and campus culture initiatives (see about page for current work & year-end impacts report: (4) Get updates about trainings, funding and job opportunities and more.

Biology/Zoology/Botany/Environmental based majors within the department. WySCI itself supports all units on campus. The University of Wyoming Science Communication Initiative (WySCI) was launched in 2017 as a grassroots, faculty- and staff-driven initiative to enhance the UW community's capacity to effectively share science with the state and the world.WySCI supports, creates, and values three major areas of SciComm/Broader Impacts work: (1) Skill building, (2) research and capacity building relating to sharing science, and (3) culture shifts to enhance the value and community around this work.

Pay rate or range: $12.00

JOB PURPOSE:

Build/enhance your transferable skills in communication, understanding and sharing research, and connecting researchers in disciplines across campus. The successful internship candidate will play a leading role, in cooperation with Bethann Garramon Merkle (WySCI director) in engagement and recruitment for the WySCI science communication certification and related services (e.g., grant development consulting, weekly resource newsletter, coding and preliminary analysis of relevant research projects (e.g., campus-wide needs surveys), etc.). This professional experience internship is ideal for someone interested in organizational management, institutional or organizational communications, sharing research with broader audiences, and/or learning more about the institutional back-end of research funding, administration, and communication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Contribute to WySCI programming, especially the weekly newsletter.

2. Conduct coding and data entry (and possibly preliminary analyses) on relevant research projects underway with WySCI.

3. Keep an eye out for additional opportunities with/for WySCI, for the intern and the organization, to extend the accessibility of WySCI's services across campus.

4. Be candid about areas of professional growth which internship supervisors can support and contribute to, and maintain open communication about project progress in balance with intern's other personal, academic, and professional responsibilities.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school degree or equivalent.
Experience: Experience producing professional communications materials (could include social media posts, press releases, research briefs, reports, group emails, etc.). Experience with or experience relevant to conducting research on organization/institution communications and management plans. Able to navigate or committed to learning how to navigate relationships and professional communications with research-active students, staff, and faculty on campus. Excellent communication skills in writing, in-person, and via zoom.
Other requirements: Must be eligible, have received and accepted work study award through Student Financial Aid for the applicable semester and/or academic year.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in science communications and reporting research results are desired, but not necessary.

2. Interactions with university students, staff, and faculty dedicated to connecting UW's research impacts to the communities and decision-makers who can benefit from them.
