Operations Manager


Job Details

The Asphalt Operations Manager is responsible for managing the asphalt operations at multiple facilities. The manager will focus on safety, quality, reliability, process improvement performance development, and management of the department. Working with the Asphalt Yard and Receiving teams, the Asphalt Operations Manager develops and maintains comprehensive procedures, policies, and systems to improve safety, training, quality, cost, and efficiency.


Essential Duties Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 20% - Safe and reliable work environment


Provide appropriate leadership, resources, and processes to ensure robust plant operations.

Promotes a culture of a safe and clean work environment where safety is the highest priority.

Ensures corrective actions are taken to investigate and resolve safety/quality/reliability/process-related issues and to make the workplace safer.

Lead, develop, and implement plans to identify and resolve hazards and housekeeping issues including deployment of capital, when needed.

Champions investigation of safety incidents and root cause analysis to help improve site and processes.


50% - Manage Asphalt Operations and align with Roofing customer goals and requirements


Guide and lead team in operational excellence quality, cost control, diversity, engagement, and regulatory compliance.

Responsible for reliable operations of the asphalt processing segment of the manufacturing operation. Assure efficient and optimized processing of asphalt on time that meets all specifications and business needs.

Develop and manage equipment integrity programs at responsible sites to assure efficient and reliable operation of all primary (asphalt processing equipment,

conveying systems) and auxiliary equipment (HTF systems, environmental controls, heaters, etc.)

Identifies and provides team guidance for developing and implementing continuous improvement, operations best practices, and process improvement activities.

Coordinates qualification trial plans and provides plant support for the qualification process including trials. Drives measurement variation reduction associated with test procedures.

Complete transactions in ERP and other systems as necessary including requisitions, inventory, material movements, and production orders.

Work with local Roofing Plant Leadership on shared services and prioritization of projects.


20% - Drive process and project engineering projects from conception to completion, utilizing company personnel as well as outside contractors.

Set clear goals and expectations of the team.

Develop metrics and dashboards to drive safety, operational/OEE, quality, and financial performance.

Create a productive atmosphere that encourages positive reinforcement, open communications, employee engagement, and ideas.

Perform other duties as assigned. Under This Roof, We Require

Bachelor s Degree required, ChE or ME Engineering preferred.

3+ years of manufacturing leadership experience in plant production, oil refining, maintenance, or asphalt processing/manufacturing.

Ability to quickly identify safety hazards and make clear recommendations to resolve them.

Knowledge of batch and continuous processes

Knowledge of Asphalt Quality and Equipment standards

Knowledge of rotating equipment, machine design, bearings, and lubrication

Knowledge of electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of gas-fired equipment (Asphalt Heaters, Steam Boilers, Thermal Oxidizers) and heat transfer equipment (Heat Exchangers, Thermal Fluid Heaters, etc)

Familiarity with interpreting Process Flow Diagrams and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams

Strongly familiar with standard manufacturing concepts, practices & procedures

Ability to perform advanced troubleshooting and solve complicated production challenges.

Advanced computer skills, including G Suite, WinSPC, AutoCAD, and Braincube.

Strong people leadership skills with a proven track record

Intermediate project management experience, organizational skills, and attention to detail

Advanced communication skills and the ability to work well with employees at all levels of the organization, as well as outside contractors and vendors.

Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment.

Ability to implement process and quality improvements.

Ability to travel.
