Job SummaryPerforms manual labor and operates "light" equipment for maintenance or construction of the City's water, sewer, streets, and drainage systems.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

The Maintenance Worker may be assigned responsibilities in any one or more of water, sewer, street, or drainage operations, maintenance, or construction category. The position assists Senior Maintenance Person in performing tasks. Depending on the particular assignment, principal accountabilities are as follows:

  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding street maintenance, traffic control (signs ad signals) and vegetation control; such as temporary and permanent asphalt patching and concrete work.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding sewer maintenance including mains, pumping stations, and appurtenances; such as repairing and cleaning mains, troubleshooting pump problems at lift station and safety observer.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding water system maintenance of mains, valves, hydrants, meters, PRVs and appurtenances; such as reading meters, repair hydrants, install and services mains.
  • Performs landscaping, turf and tree maintenance of City properties and R.O.W.s using elementary level skills of pruning, transplanting, planting, drainage, pesticide spraying, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, sweeping, blowing, and edging.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding storm drain maintenance including mains, catch basins, detention/retention facilities and channelization.
  • Acts as flagperson to control traffic while road work is being accomplished.
  • Assists Senior Maintenance Person in performing tasks.
  • May be required to perform standby duty if there are not enough volunteers to fill the need.

Peripheral Duties:
  • Performs functions as assigned in the City's emergency response plan in the event of an emergency. May be required to return to the City during off hours in case of emergency.
  • Compiles data for surveys.
  • May perform work outside of classification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power-driven tools.
  • Ability to operate "light" equipment, such as five-yard dump truck, backhoe as a loader and concrete mixer among others.
  • Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet with the public and communicate effectively with citizens.
  • Ability to read blueprints and engineering plans.
  • Basic elementary skill levels in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, cement finishing and mechanical skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: 1 year of utility construction or landscaping experience.
  • Or: In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual's knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to remain insurable under the City's insurance to operate motor vehicles.
  • Possess and maintain current Class A Combination Driver's License with air and tanker endorsements or must obtain within 12 months of date of hire (training paid by the City, license endorsement paid by the employee).
  • Must obtain and maintain certified flagging card within 6 months of date of hire.
  • May be required to obtain pesticide spray certification within 6 months, depending on assigned area.
  • May be required to obtain lift truck card within 6 months, depending on assigned area.
  • Municipal experience is preferred.

Other

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
  • Must be able to climb into and out of trenches and excavation and construction equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds and bulky objects.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.

This position includes a health insurance benefit package with 100% City-paid premiums for 1.0 FTE (medical/dental/vision for employee and dependents). Premium is prorated for less than 1.0 FTE positions with cost shared between City and the employee.

Participation in the Public Employees Retirement System is mandatary for all eligible positions.
