What You Will Do

The Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W-DO) is seeking to fill an R&D Manager 3 (Deputy Group Leader) position in the Weapon Systems Safety Analysis Group (W-10). W-10 is a multidisciplinary group of technical professionals and staff who support the overarching line and programmatic goals of the NNSA Nuclear Weapons Program related to component, system, and operational safety. W-10 performs formal weapon response analysis and develops weapon response information that is used to facilitate characterization of operational risks in NNSA nuclear explosive operations and identification and development of appropriate risk mitigating controls. The required formal weapon response technical basis information, that underpins the release of all formal weapon response, is developed and maintained by W-10. Similarly, for the LANL subcritical experiment (SCE) program and LANL SCE activities conducted at the NNSA Nevada National Security Site, W-10 performs formal SCE device response analysis and hazard analysis, and develops and maintains the required supporting formal technical basis information. W-10 also manages a research & development portfolio of activities and projects to support, inform, and continuously improve the formal technical basis for LANL weapon response and SCE device response.

The W-10 Deputy Group Leader will work with and support the Group Leader with both line and program management responsibilities for the Weapon Systems Safety Analysis Group.They will collaborate with the Group Leader in planning, organizing, and managing technical and administrative activities within the group as well as in nurturing a healthy work environment that encourages learning, teaming, creating mutual respect, and delivering excellence at all levels.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Demonstrated successful leadership skills and a demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution. Demonstrated experience successfully mentoring newer staff members, demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and internal and external customers.

Project Management: Advanced ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Ability to provide technical and programmatic direction.

Nuclear Weapon Systems: Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile. Demonstrated direct experience in one or more of the following areas: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, and surveillance. Demonstrated experience with highly complex, system-level integrated experiments preferably involving high explosives.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of, and experience with, handling classified material.
  • Familiarity with the Laboratory weapons production development and programmatic activities.
  • Experience with conflict resolution.
  • Experience as a Derivative Classifier (DC).
  • Knowledge of engineering authorization systems, document management systems (e.g., PDM Link or like software) and applications to stockpile maintenance and configuration management.
  • Clearance: Active DOE-Q-Clearance, or ability to obtain an Active Q-Clearance
