Summary
The Youth Leadership Program Coordinator will develop and pilot a formal multi-faceted youth leadership program for young adults ages 16-30 years old at Everglades National Park. The goal of a formal youth leadership program is to create leadership developmental opportunities for youth through participation in internships and volunteer opportunities. These opportunities would accomplish meaningful work for the National Park Service while providing intentional environmental leadership development that empowers young adults to become empowered and professional leaders in conservation.

Duties

  • Work with park managers to analyze and assess the current internship program at Everglades National Park and conduct a gap analysis.
  • Develop a formal leadership program at Everglades National Park to include a leadership curriculum for future interns, and develop/coordinate new young adult internship/volunteer opportunities at Everglades National Park.
  • Coordinate and pilot various components of a newly developed leadership program to include recruitment, communication with internal and external audiences, setting up leadership speakers, facilitating leadership activities etc.
  • Make presentations to park managers to communicate data results, initial conceptual ideas, progress updates and final products.

Qualifications
  • BA/BS in outdoor recreation or environmental conservation or education or similar degree.
  • Individuals who have past experiences participating and/or leading environmental or outdoor leadership/recreational programs will have preference.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor setting.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or U.S. national.
  • Between 16-30 years of age.
  • Able to pass a federal background check.

Vehicle/License Requirement
The successful candidate must have a valid state driver's license. Must have transportation to and from the job site. Must be able to drive a government vehicle.

Benefits
  • A transportation stipend of $40 a week will also be provided to the successful candidate.
  • Upon the successful completion of 640 hours, the intern will be eligible to receive a 2-year non-competitive hiring authority which will help the intern obtain a temporary or permanent job with the National Park Service.


*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
