Job Details

Under the general direction of the Environmental Program Manager II, the EPM I plans, organizes, directs, or oversees complex and sensitive DPR-funded integrated pest management (IPM) projects, an endangered species protection program, and statewide pesticide use reporting by agricultural pesticide users. The incumbent supervises and directs up to 14 scientists, analysts, and technical specialists in pest management disciplines (entomology, weed science, nematology, and plant pathology), agronomy, horticulture, plant science, statistics, and data collection/evaluation involved in agricultural and urban pest management programs and projects. Other duties involve implementation of laws and regulations, reviewing, evaluating and commenting on federal laws and regulations, and interacting with other branches within the Department and California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), California Department of Food and Agriculture, the Water Board, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, county, federal agencies and various universities.

Working Conditions

  • The employee will work in a high-rise office building with a climate-controlled environment and artificial lighting.
  • The employee may be required to sit for long periods at a time and must be able to use a computer monitor, mouse, and keyboard for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Travel throughout the state, sometimes requiring overnight stays, may be required.
Note: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR), part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA), is a predominantly self-funded department dedicated to protecting human health and the environment by fostering sustainable pest management and regulating pesticides (Department Website: DPR headquarters is located in the CalEPA Building at 1001 I Street in Sacramento, CA. The position is with the Innovation and Implementation Support Unit of the Integrated Pest Management Branch of DPR. The Innovation and Implementation Support Unit currently resides in the CalEPA Building, however, telework options are available for this position.
