Job Summary

**FIRST REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS APRIL 11TH

The Solid Waste Equipment Operator facilitates the collection of recyclables from the public and commercial haulers. The Operator determines the disposition of each class of recycling material and transports, loads, bales and processes the material for the next step in the process. Acts as a contact person as the public drops off recyclable materials and answers questions concerning recycling. May operate heavy equipment to receive, process, and transport solid waste at the Rice County Landfill and/or provide office assistance for landfill and recycling divisions. Assists the Household Hazardous Waste Coordinator with the collection, disposal, and transport of hazardous waste.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates light equipment, including forklifts, balers, can crushers, skid loaders, conveyors and all other equipment used in recycling department to process recycling materials for shipment.
  • Receives recyclables at the public drop off area and answers questions for the public.
  • Performs daily maintenance on all equipment used in the department.
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance to promote a clean and safe work environment.
  • May move garbage from public drop sites and commercial loads to specific areas in the landfill and maintains landfill property.
  • Receives, packages, and arranges for transportation of household and business hazardous waste.
  • Weighs in all garbage, demolition, and recycling loads; determines where materials should be unloaded; and codes and charges customers accordingly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum job requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and one to three years related experience. Must have medical approval to wear an air-purifying respirator and be physically able to move waste upon delivery for safe and proper storage. Additional qualifications include a general knowledge of equipment maintenance and/or construction practices, good verbal communication skills and the ability to work as a part of a team. Class C Driver's License required upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications: Class B Commercial License and Landfill Operators Certificate preferred but not required.
Supplemental Information

HIRING RANGE / UNION: $21.96-$24.03 per hour / 49ers - Grade6

HOURS: Full-Time, 40 Hours Per Week. Generally, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday and Saturdays 7:30 am - 11:30 am.
