The Submarine Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the submarine's daily tour operations and associated responsibilities. This position provides superior customer service to OMSI's guests, and onsite leadership for the submarine staff. Under the direction of the Vice President of Marketing and Retail, the position provides support in key operational and administrative areas of department management, including but not limited to the training and scheduling of volunteer and paid staff tour guides, supervision of submarine programs and events, coordination of submarine activities with other museum departments, and maintenance of submarine reports and logs.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Submarine Day-to-Day Operations:
    • Conducts weekly inspections, and directs submarine maintenance volunteers on required maintenance. Communicates and coordinates additional maintenance needs with the Facilities team and the VP of Marketing & Retail;
    • Meets regularly with the VP of Marketing & Retail to discuss overall submarine operations and efficiency, such as financial performance, guest feedback, and personnel issues;
    • Evaluates submarine lab educational content for relevancy. Leads and coordinates with the OMSI Museum Education team on the development of new curriculum, as needed;
    • Leads and coordinates the delivery of submarine safety and emergency trainings, and stays current on museum-wide safety protocols and procedures;
    • Coordinates with Events and other departments in staging promotional and educational events for the public, with an emphasis on coordinating submarine logistics and staffing.
  • Submarine Tour Guide Responsibilities:
    • Provide interpretive tours to groups of up to 20 people;
    • Perform submarine queuing responsibilities, which includes promoting the submarine and museum experiences in the OMSI lobby;
    • Complete submarine cleaning, maintenance, and administrative tasks as assigned;
    • Perform daily submarine opening and closing duties. Complete corresponding checklist when needed;
    • Execute all submarine safety and security protocols in order to protect staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Leads and supervises the submarine staff. Tasks include-but are not limited to-the following:
    • Sets and creates submarine training schedules for new staff, as well as continual training opportunities;
    • Creates and maintains submarine staff schedules, and coordinates with the Program Sales team on group tours and programming (such as submarine labs);
    • Prepares and facilitates the development and implementation of staff workplans, and provides regular 1-on-1s, check-ins, regular team meetings, and performance reviews;
    • Collaborates with Volunteer Engagement staff to coordinate appropriate staffing needs and training/supervisory practices.
Working Conditions
  • This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;

  • This position requires working on weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings;
  • Physical Demands: 5% sitting, 90% standing, 5% lifting/carrying/pushing 50 lbs;

    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
    • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)

    • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)
  • Environmental Demands include:
    • Wet or humid conditions (non-weather)

  • Noise Levels include:
    • Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
    • Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment)
Secondary Job Responsibilities

Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
  • Maintain working knowledge of submarine and naval history and current affairs, and update submarine trainings as appropriate;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with naval and maritime organizations such as the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, the Navy League, the HNSA, and the Blueback Base;
  • Represent OMSI and the submarine at programs, organizations, and community events to market and increase awareness of the submarine and museum.

    • Knowledgeable of submarine technology and engineering, and the ability to resolve technical problems and/or ability to coordinate the appropriate resources for resolution;
    • Knowledge of military/naval history and technology.

  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English).
Education & Work Experience

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in STEAM, History, Military Science, or equivalent experience;
  • 2 years of demonstrated experience working in a public-facing, customer service environment;
  • 1 year supervising staff in a fast-paced, public-facing retail and/or service environment;
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with people of diverse background and talents.
PREFERENCES:
  • Navy or marine background;
  • Experience working with and/or supervising volunteers;
  • Working knowledge of one or more technical areas such as electronics, electrical, HVAC, information technology, plumbing, or machinery.
