Product Design Engineer:

As a Product Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design, testing, and scale-up of new and next-gen products. You ll work directly with customers on jobsites and with our Applications Team to understand functionality requirements in order to develop new products and refine existing designs. You ll work with our Supply Chain team and directly with our suppliers globally to design for manufacturability followed by scaling up mass production. With strong leadership skills, technical acumen, and attention to detail you can help us improve the solar installation process and accelerate the adoption of solar.

The position is based at our headquarters in Richmond, CA, with flexibility to work remotely up to 3 days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Be a key contributor developing and refining product solutions for the solar market by defining requirements, generating concepts, determining evaluation metrics, building or procuring concept prototypes, evaluating concept functionality, down selecting, and iterating.
  • Collaborate closely with our test engineering team - testing preliminary concepts, design evaluation, determining new solutions.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously.
  • Nurture new concepts within the lab from ideation through to high-volume production.
  • Track and demonstrate that your designs meet the product requirements that you help define.
  • Validating design changes with testing or modeling data.
  • Executing first article inspection of products, in conjunction with suggesting and documenting changes needed.
  • Analyze components for optimization and to ensure functionality (FEA, tolerance analysis, DFX, etc.).
  • Provide technical feedback to other design engineers.
  • Identify cost-down opportunities in existing products.
  • Design and documentation control for new and existing products.
  • Implement continuous improvements and best practices with the team

Minimum qualifications

  • B. S. or higher in mechanical engineering
  • 8+ years in a mechanical engineering and product design role
  • Highly proficient designing products for high-volume production (extrusions, stampings, die-castings, injection molding, etc.)
  • Experience with prototyping, Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Comfortable with basic hand tools such as drills, impact drivers and torque wrenches
  • Experience and willingness to be hands-on during the product development process
  • Capable with math, computational analysis, FEA, FMEA, PLM
  • Proficiency in Solidworks
  • Ability to work independently driving design concepts through to mass production
  • Proficiency in Arena is a plus
  • Ability to create high quality engineering drawings and a thorough knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Creative capacity for developing new ways to do things better, cheaper, faster
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external teams
  • Mandarin or Spanish speaking is a plus
