Position: Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Location: Wadesboro, NC

Position Overview: The EHS Specialist coordinates environmental, health and safety activities including training, inspections; maintains records, permits and emergency plans; makes recommendations for improving policies and procedures. This position will partner directly with the Operations Manager and Global EHS Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promote a safe and clean work area that meets both the spirit and content of laws, regulations and standards for all EHS activities.
  • Provide appropriate training for management, supervision and all associates with respect to EHS policy, practices and procedures.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) program, which consists of master sheets file, computer program, and justification records and approvals. Track chemical usage information for calculations and report filing.
  • Characterize wastes, arrange for disposal, and maintain traceable records. Participate in waste minimization efforts. Ensure safe and appropriate storage of waste and other chemicals in compliance with federal, state, and local standards.
  • Gather data; perform calculations to determine reporting requirements and complete reports for distribution to federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Perform tests as needed to ensure compliance with permits and/or applicable regulations.
  • Inspect Transfer, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDF), develop risk guidance prior to use for disposal, and ensure compliance with DOT Hazmat requirements.
  • Interface with outside agencies, inspectors and consultants.
  • Act as Team Leader for Safety Team and plant inspections.
  • Monitor and drive safety action items, assigns responsible party to take corrective action and maintain records for follow up.
  • Maintain safety programs and industrial hygiene duties such as, but not limited to, hearing conservation, blood borne pathogens, air sampling, asbestos, personal protective equipment and others as required by standards and regulations.
  • Coordinate incident response, investigate injuries, root cause analysis, report to management on individual cases and monitor on periodic (monthly) basis.
  • Prepares and submits monthly safety statistics including workers compensation cost summaries.
  • Assists with tracking and managing open workers compensation cases. Reviews medical documentation for workers compensation injuries to assist employees in proceeding to medical improvement.
  • Manage stock of safety supplies, and order replenishments as necessary to maintain safe plant operations.
  • Actively participate in Corporate EHS audits, and work with plant personnel to ensure completion of any identified corrective actions.
  • Track all EHS-related data and metrics, and report that information monthly through the company s tracking software.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree from four-year college or university
  • One to Three+ years related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret graphs and sketches.
  • Understand volumes, density and elementary engineering terms.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and plan actions accordingly.
  • Ability to be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Has working knowledge of environmental remediation management and environmental program administration.
  • Skilled and familiar with industrial health, hygiene, safety practices and environmental practices.
  • Requires knowledge of OSHA standards, EPA regulations, (state and federal) and DOT Hazmat regulations.
  • Requires knowledge and use of PC and related software skills as needed.
  • Requires good interpersonal skills.
  • Requires good communication skills with the ability to share information as necessary to inform and influence plant stakeholders.
