Job Summary
Underthe supervision of the Fleet Captain, this position will perform deckhandduties on vessels in the Halstead Fleet or other university vessels as assigned. Temporary deckhands are responsiblefor general maintenance, upkeep, and cleanliness of the vessel while at sea andin port. This is a temporary, non-benefitted position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs day-to-day maintenance on research vessels to include loading, storing, and maintaining all equipment;performs cleaning and general maintenance; performs linehandling duties; painting; and yard work. These duties will beperformed in all types of weather, night and day, and while the vessel isunderway.
  2. Assists the Captain with navigation of the vessel. Must beable to communicate with Captain and passengers via VHF radio, orally, orsound/hand signals.
  3. Operates winches,A-frames, and trawls; performs engine room checks and rigging.
  4. Assists scientific crews with safe and efficient gear deployments and retrievals to include nets, CTDs, and other necessary equipment.
  5. Assists passengers asneeded and helps oversee general safety of those on board vessel.
  6. Serves as a deckhand onother university vessels as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

High schooldiploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years old.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to complete and pass an internal training program required forapproval to operate the vessel's deck equipment. Position is subject tohands-on training necessary to gain skills using hydraulic systems, cranes, andwinches.
  • Ability to routinely lift, pull, and push up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability towork away from home, offshore, over-night,weekends, and some holidays.
  • Ability towork on a daily basis at vessel's homeport, while not on a charter.
  • Ability toreturn to vessels on scheduled time off in the event of emergency or to helpfacilitate the university's hurricane evacuation plan.
  • Ability andwillingness to cross-train and work on other university vessels as needed.
  • Basiccomputer knowledge and ability to operate Microsoft Office.


Preferred Qualifications

1-3 monthsof related experience, First Aid,CPR/AED Certification, MississippiBoater Education Certification
