The Senior Engineer (Civil/Roadway) will assist in executing LA Metro s mission to provide a world-class transportation system that enhances quality of life for all who live, work and play within LA County.


Position Overview:

The Senior Engineer performs complex engineering work related to general civil engineering and roadway related work including design of roadway alignment and profile, drainage, utilities, and related expertise. The candidate will also oversee engineers through the review of project submittals with the goal of achieving compliance with company standards, directives, and project objectives. Responsibility includes planning, organizing, assigning, implementing, and managing engineering projects in accordance with budget and schedule requirements; interacting with user departments in response to service requests; and providing engineering design services and design support during construction. This position also provides support for the project bid and award phase, construction management, closeout, activation, and startup activities for bus and rail transit projects.


Job Duties:

Other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting development of workplans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements, and operational needs for design projects
  • Reviewing contract documents, shop drawings, specifications, request for information, and detailed design review for compliance with codes, project specifications, and Metro criteria
  • Reviewing designs for quality, constructability, and cost effectiveness; recommending design changes
  • Assuring project compliance with design criteria and standards, workplans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements, and operational needs
  • Managing Contract Document Required Receivables and project budget for assigned projects
  • Updating and enforcing the Metro Design Standards and Criteria
  • Preparing preliminary design documents for future projects
  • Coordinating projects with utility companies, railroad, and city, county, and state agencies when required
  • Making field visits for research and inventory
  • Providing resident engineer and quality control inspection services
  • Providing guidance, coaching, training, and overseeing the work
  • product of employees in areas of expertise


The Ideal Candidate:

Successful candidates should offer experience in performing civil engineering analysis and design work related to roadway drainage, grading, traffic studies and utilities; and in utilizing computer-aided tools, such as AutoCAD and Micro Station, to perform civil engineering tasks. Knowledge of contract administration, budgeting, project management, and control practices is essential to success in this role. Candidates with outstanding communication, time management, and analytical skills are encouraged to apply. The incoming Senior Engineer should also have the ability to serve as the lead for in-house specialized engineering activities for bus and rail transit engineering projects from conception to completion.


A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. A typical combination of requirements includes:


Education:

Bachelor s Degree in Engineering or a related field, in a related field; A Master s Degree in a related field is highly desirable.


Experience:

  • Six (6) years of relevant experience or three (3) years of supervisory level experience in appropriate engineering discipline, including design and construction of public transit projects or major public agency projects.
  • Must have roadway design engineering background.


Knowledge:

  • Fundamentals of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, vehicle, systems design

  • Serve as the lead for in-house specialized engineering activities for bus and rail transit engineering projects from conception to completion
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside Third-Party representatives
