ABOUT THE DIVISON OF TRANSIT SERVICES

The Division of Transit Services coordinates transit services in Montgomery County. Transit accomplishes an essential mobility mission of the County, connecting people, communities, workplaces, educational institutions, recreational opportunities, and many other essential destinations. The Division plans, schedules and manages the County's Ride On bus system consisting of County owned and operated buses. The Ride On system is designed to complement the service provided by the other transit providers in the County and provides almost 21 million trips per year.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING :

The Division of Transit Services seeks to fill a Transit System Information Systems Technician position. This position is responsible for internal consultant in team-based processes to specify, acquire, install, and operate leading-edge transit information/ communication systems, and hands-on technician. In the internal consultant role, the employees provide technical and practical input for the development of specifications for new/improved bus-based information and communication systems. In the technician role, the employees test, install, maintain, and repair complex transit information/ communication systems having integrated electro-mechanical components; they also train others on and oversee their use.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs bench and field repairs to the component level on a networked SmartCardsystem digital video system and Wi-Fi support.
  • Oversees daily operations of SmartCard system/Fareboxes, including the resolution of system hardware, software, and communication (i.e. Routers) problems.
  • Develops and implements training plans to ensure Bus Operators and other employees are trained in system use.
  • Oversees the daily compilation, retrieval, and storage of the SmartCard field database. Prepares database reports. Queries database and assists in analysis of data for all electronic devices.
  • Maintains the preventive maintenance, repair, and spare parts inventory database.
  • Provides technical and practical input on the specification, acquisition and installation of hardware and software and any associated facility modifications, telecommunications, or radio issues.
  • Provides liaison between department's divisions, management, and contractors on the SmartCard system. Makes recommendations for system improvements and other leading-edge systems and sub-systems.
  • Develops, recommends, and provides supporting documentation for the department's budget. Manages a budget to ensure adequate funding is available for supplies and parts.
  • Assists office staff in the operation of personal computers and applications software.
  • Serves as fleet coordinator for staff vehicles.
  • Drives a passenger bus, with air brakes, during training, demonstrations, and operational emergencies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

This position REQUIRES possession of a valid commercial driver's license and the ability to drive a county vehicle.

This position requires the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside the office and sometimes during evening (after work) and/or weekend hours.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee." Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave .

This position will require a criminal record check/background investigation.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

The anticipated salary range in hiring for this position is: $58,578 - $75,612

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Three (3) years of journey level experience in the troubleshooting and installation of microprocessor based electronic systems, revenue handling equipment or communication systems.

Education: An Associate of Arts Degree in electronics technology or a related field.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

LICENSE:

At the time of employment application:
  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Upon completion of bus driver training by Montgomery County:
  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "B" (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with air brakes and passenger endorsements; from the employee's state of residence.


Preferred Criteria

There are No Preferred Criteria Assessments .All applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications.   • Experience providing oral communication such as presentation, briefings, etc., and written communication such as reports, proposals, etc.
