The Structural Designer will perform routine aspects of engineering requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering principles under close supervision; work is reviewed for adequacy and accuracy. Under general supervision, performs assignments of limited scope to produce designs that satisfy the requirements of building designs in accordance with applicable governing codes. This requires the application of standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria where the scope is already outlined in the form of contract drawings, specifications, one-line drawings and component estimates.

Requirements

  • Normally requires a BS in Architecture or an Engineering discipline and typically 0 - 2 years related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).
  • Limited experience in utilizing various computer software packages such as Revit, AutoCAD and other automated engineering and design equipment/ software.
  • Revit (3D modeling software)
  • Architectural AXP registration or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification is preferred for this classification.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to walk job sites which would include the ability to clime stairs and navigate construction sites.
  • The majority of work is performed indoors with occasional site visits to projects.
  • Up to 10% by both air and ground travel.

  • Accumulates specific information to expand the outline specification and further define the scope of work.
  • Prepares basic working drawings and performs calculations for selected portions of a project.
  • Assists in preparation of technical specifications. Gathers and records information to be used for determining and selecting the proper materials and for writing specifications.
  • Makes recommendations to the Chief Architect or Engineer on the type of materials to be used to satisfy the scope of the project.
  • Evaluates vendor bids and drawings to assure compliance with the specifications and requirements of the project and reviews results with the Project Lead, the Design Project Manager, or the Chief.
  • For purposes of developing the respective skill sets, the designer will be introduced to the following functions:
  • Reviews design drawings of other employees or offices for accuracy within defined limits.
  • Work with other disciplines to ensure there are no conflicts or interferences between disciplines.
  • Must ensure that all design work is in accordance with the preliminary scope definition and complies with all applicable building codes.
  • Develop modeling skills using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Perform basic analysis and design calculations (beams, columns, footings).
  • Create/revise Contract Document drawings.
  • Become familiar with codes and various design programs.
  • Check drawings and calculations created by others.
  • Become familiar with estimating and construction function.
  • Access shop drawings, RFIs, etc.
  • Working understanding of the following Codes:
    • American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI 318)
  • Familiarity or interest to learn the follow software packages:
    • Design and Review: Revit, ACC/BIM360, Navisworks, Revizto, Bluebeam Revu
    • Project and Productivity: Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Procore
