TOWNSHIP OF LOWER MERION----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------JOB POSTINGPOSITION:Fleet Mechanic 1Public Works Department - Fleet DivisionRANGE & RATE:Schedule WA00 Range 06Starting Salary: $33.591/hr., - $69,869/yr.40-hour workweekSUMMARY:This is responsible journeyman level maintenance and repair work to vehicles and equipment.Work involves responsibility for safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of vehicles, light trucks, roads and grounds equipment, and police vehicles. Duties include repairing brakes, exhausts, and related components, tuning engines, performing emergency road repairs, changing and repairing tires, changing oil, lubricating and related preventive maintenance. This position also has the responsibility for making standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair.Works under the general supervision of a Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader.DUTIES:Performs state and emission inspections. Diagnoses/identifies vehicle and equipment malfunctions and determines corrective actions to be taken through tests and inspections. Tests vehicles and equipment after repairs. Verifies completion of repairs to ensure quality service deliverable.Repairs or overhauls engines, transmissions, gear trains, differentials, steering/brake/clutch/ electrical systems, power takeoffs, hydraulic and pneumatic lifts and controls, and related components. Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance.Performs on-the-road emergency repairs to disabled vehicles and equipment. Tows disabled vehicles, road tests vehicles and equipment.Performs preventative maintenance, in-service inspections and field operational evaluations, as necessary.Brazes or welds frames, sheet metal and various equipment components, such as hoppers and plows.May change and repair tires, as necessary.Demonstrates maintenance and repair procedures to lower level classifications.Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.Completes job or shift report form, as assigned.Performs electronic data entry of vehicle and equipment repair information through a Computerized Maintenance Management System.Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventative maintenance prior to use.Repairs brakes, exhausts, and related components, as assigned. Tunes engines. Performs routine repairs to automobiles and trucks, as assigned. Assists Mechanic 2 and/or Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader in more difficult repairs or repairs to heavy equipment.Performs state inspections, emissions inspections, and routine and preventive maintenance.Oversees any assigned workers.Performs related work as required.QUALIFICATIONS:A high school diploma or the equivalent supplemented by training in automotive and equipment repair, plus four years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical or vehicle service and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis.Valid Class B Commercial Driver s License (CDL-B) free of air brake restrictions. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) preferred with the requirement to be obtained within one year from date of hire.Possession of a Class 7 PA State Inspection License preferred. Candidates not possessing this license will be required to obtain it within 6 months of hire date.Class 8 Enhanced Emission Inspection License preferred. Candidates not possessing this license will be required to obtain it within 6 months of hire date.Automotive Air Conditioning Certification. (EPA 609) preferred. Candidates not possessing this license will be required to obtain it within 6 months of hire date.Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred.Considerable skill in the use of mechanic s tools.
