Job Details

The Docket Clerk will register all required legal documents with the appropriate courts and agencies to ensure compliance with the federal, state and local government mandates, and perform general record keeping duties for the Docket Department.


Docket Clerk Responsibilities:

  • Files and retrieves documents regarding real estate tax valuation with the County Board of Review.
  • Obtains copies of birth and death certificates from the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
  • Files documents such as tax returns and corporate elections with the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Electronically files documents with the courts.
  • Provides information such as names of court personnel, addresses for courthouses, and details on court procedures.
  • Handles local messenger deliveries during the morning and afternoon courthouse runs.
  • Retrieves court dockets for U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts by using Courtlink.
  • Tracks court appearances and calculates due dates for documents requiring response using eDockets.
  • Files complaints and other pleadings with Cleveland Municipal Court, Cuyahoga Common Pleas Court, Arbitration Commission, Domestic Relations Court, Juvenile Court, the Cuyahoga County Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court, and U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
  • Walks documents through various procedures required to complete the courts' internal processing and delivers them to the judge's chambers or law clerk's office.
  • Obtains temporary restraining orders in Domestic Relations Court.
  • Obtains copies of pleadings and court dockets.
  • Files judgment liens.
  • Files deeds, mortgages and various other real estate documents with the County Recorder.
  • Records UCC financing statements and searches.
  • Obtains tax releases and pays taxes at the Ohio Estate Tax Department.
  • Obtains real estate valuation information, duplicate tax bills and pays real estate taxes with the County Auditor's Office.


Docket Clerk Requirements:

  • High school degree or equivalent, required.
  • At least 3-5 years prior experience working in a law firm Docket Department.
  • Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic computations at a level normally acquired through the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of rules and filing requirements of local, federal and state courts and agencies.
  • Proficient knowledge of firm software and hardware including Outlook, Word, 3E, telephones, and photocopiers.
  • Ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints; strong organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow the instruction effectively from a diverse group of attorneys, staff, and court personnel and provide information with courtesy and tact.
  • Work occasionally requires a high level of mental effort and strain when performing a high volume of clerical tasks and performing other essential duties.
  • Strong commitment to the Docket Department as a customer service function within the Firm, and ability to operate effectively and cooperatively within the Docket Department to enable the department to function cohesively and to provide excellent customer service within the Firm.
