Mastagni Holstedt, A.P.C. is actively seeking a highly qualified criminal defense attorney to join its growing Criminal Defense practice in Sacramento. The ideal candidate will have at minimum two (2) years of relevant practice experience. Experience in criminal defense highly preferred.

The ideal candidates will have broad experience with all types of criminal matters, including: DUI, drug possession, domestic violence, assault, battery, vehicular and non-vehicular manslaughter, restraining orders.

The ideal candidate will also have outstanding credentials and qualifications demonstrating a strong ability to spot and analyze complex issues and devise practical strategies and solutions. Candidates must be committed to client service, a quick learner, and have strong writing, organizational, research, and communication abilities. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Verified California Drivers License and reliable transportation.
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited legal institution.
  • Licensed by and in good standing with the California Bar.
  • Excellent working knowledge of California and federal statutes, including rules of criminal and civil procedure.
  • Two (2) years experience practicing as an attorney. Previous experience handling criminal cases (federal, state, local) highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in oral advocacy skills and ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Interest and aptitude to represent clients in contested forums ranging from jury trials, court trials, and arbitrations to before various public board forums and the state capitol.
  • Ability to adhere to firm processes, procedures, and practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive representation of clients in criminal law matters including representing clients in criminal court, mediation, and/or other contested forums. Appear in court and/or other hearings/forums, argue motions, and participate in trials as necessary.
  • Advise clients on legal rights and defenses and provide legal analysis. Representing clients before governmental agencies may be required.
  • Draft legal documents, pleadings, and/or other motions. Conduct legal research, take and defend depositions or other investigatory interviews, draft and answer discovery, and communicate effectively with clients, prosecutors, witnesses, and experts. Arbitration/trial preparation as needed.
  • Independently manage caseload and cases from beginning to end and stays abreast of deadlines.
  • Conduct and/or direct additional investigation as may be necessary to competently defend contested actions in court or other judicial forums.
  • Prepare and present evidence in those forums as well as making pertinent legal and factual arguments.
  • Attend MCLE trainings and keep up-to-date with the latest legal developments affecting criminal law.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships, credibility and trust with clients, legal team members, and other colleagues.
  • Participation in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule required. Attendance at monthly client board meetings and/or other client events may be expected.
