Registered Nurse First Assistant for Union Hospital

Full-time Day/Evening- 40 hours weekly- Monday through Thursday position with call coverage on weekends (Friday through Sunday) and some holidays.

The shift is (4) 10-hour shifts starting at 0700.

Responsibilities

Acts as first assistant to the attending surgeon during those surgical procedures requiring an assistant; under the direct
supervision of the attending surgeon, performing only those functions specifically stated in a manner consistent with RN
first assistant training.
Assists with positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient.
Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as
directed and supervised by the surgeon.
Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
Handles tissues as directed by the surgeon.
Sutures fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissues under the direction of the surgeon, if so desired by the surgeon.
Places and suture drains as directed by the surgeon.
Applies surgical dressings and assists in transferring the patient from the operating room.
Demonstrates skill

s related to the management of clinical emergencies.
Maintains knowledge in selected areas regarding clinical issues. This includes skill necessary to provide care to neonatal,
pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients including growth and development and the ability to obtain and interpret
information to identify patient needs and provide the care needed.

Requirements:

BSN requires; or commitment to obtaining within three years of the date of hire.

Current Registered Nurse license.
Two years' experience in perioperative nursing practice.
Registered Nurse First Assistant. Completion of a formal education program that includes didactic and preceptor training;
where the Core Curriculum for the RN First Assistant is the guideline for educational content, the education takes place in an institution approved by the Association of Higher Education (or its equivalent), and a degree or certificate is awarded upon successful program completion.

Certified in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR). ACLS certification is recommended. Meets requirements of statutes, regulations and institutional policies relevant to RN First Assistant.
