The Position

This position performs skilled work in one or more of the building or industrial maintenance trades. This position consists of construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair work to buildings, structures, and systems. Assignments are received in oral and written form and may be accompanied by sketches, diagrams, or blueprints. Work is reviewed by a crew chief or supervisor for conformance and adherence to established codes and regulations. Work is performed under the guidance of a senior tradesworker, crew chief, or supervisor and periodically evaluated under the supervision of a manager.
General Description

  • Performs general and specialized tasks in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, and repair including but not limited to airfield lighting, buildings, wastewater systems, emergency generators, signage, security fencing, high mast lighting, pavements concrete and asphalt surfaces per standard trade practices.
  • Performs electrical installations and repairs including but not limited to airport structures, panels, boxes, switches and systems, motor troubleshooting and replacement, lighting ballasts replacement, the removal and replacement of wiring and fixtures, and the removal and replacement of panel breakers. Must be able to safely incorporate lockout / tagout procedures.
  • Performs general plumbing including but not limited to; fixture repair and replacement, unclogging septic and sewer lines, repairing potable water sources, lift station troubleshooting and repair, and limited fuel hose replacements.
  • Performs general carpentry work including but not limited to; building cabinets, shelving, paneling, and framework.
  • Performs tile work, plastering, cement, masonry, and block work as required.
  • Renovates and replaces bathroom partitions and flooring.
  • Performs painting of buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.
  • Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds general equipment.
  • Performs all other work as required or directed.
  • Ability to work shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the building trades and/or industrial maintenance trades. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, rough sketches, and wiring diagrams. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Must be skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the trades to which assigned. Must have the ability to climb a ladder and work at elevated heights, lift objects of up to 50 lbs., reach for and/or lift objects overhead, bend, stoop, and walk as required. Ability to communicate freely using two-way radios or cellular devices sometimes in very noisy environments. Ability to safely operate company vehicles. Ability to perform duties occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

Training and Experience: High school diploma/GED required. One year of experience as an electrician, A/C technician, plumber, carpenter, mason, painter, welder, or general tradesworker preferred. Any combination of education and experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform duties safely and effectively, may be substituted.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and good driving history is required. Florida commercials driver's license (CDL) desirable.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES

Lee County Port Authority personnel are designated by Tier levels and may be called upon to assist with an emergency or unforeseen event at any time. Employees may be called upon to fulfill duties that are outside their normal scope of work to assist in resuming airport operations and flight activities.

Overview of Benefits

Florida Retirement System (FRS)

The employee has a choice of a pension or an investment plan. The FRS Pension Plan is a traditional defined benefit plan that offers you a guaranteed monthly benefit for life after the required vesting period. The FRS Investment Plan is a defined contribution plan that receives an employer contribution of 6.3% for regular class employees and 14% for special risk employees . Both are employee and employer-sponsored retirement plans. Lee County Port Authority employees eligible to participate in FRS are required to contribute 3% of each paycheck to FRS. If you have retired from the FRS pension plan, please be advised that you are not eligible for renewed membership in either of the FRS retirement plan options.

Medical Insurance

The Port Authority offers two plan choices for all full-time employees, their spouse and their dependents. Coverage begins the first of the month following their date of hire.

Dental Insurance

The Port Authority offers a dental plan for full time employees, their spouse and children.

Vision Insurance

If you are enrolled in the medical plan you and your family are eligible for basic vision coverage through vision discounts. Two more comprehensive plans are offered, including a basic vision plan and a vision 2 high option plan, paid entirely by the employee.

Employee Assistance Program

The Port Authority provides this benefit at no cost to the employee. This is the availability of licensed professional counselors for personal issues with 100% confidentiality.

Flexible Spending Account(s)

There are two types of reimbursement accounts: Medical and Dependent Care. It is optional and allows the employee to have pre tax dollars deducted from their paycheck for reimbursement of medical costs not covered by your plans or child care costs for children under 13.

Life /AD & D Insurance

The Port Authority provides this benefit at no cost to the employee. Employees are insured at an amount equal to the annual salary rounded to the next higher thousand dollars. The AD&D insurance provides additional coverage in the event the employee should lose their limb(s), eyesight or die.

Optional Life Insurance

The Port Authority provides the employee with an option to purchase additional life insurance coverage for him/herself, their spouse and their child(ren).

Short Term Disability

The Port Authority provides the employee with short term disability coverage for him/herself at no cost to the employee.

Long Term Disability

The Port Authority provides this benefit at no cost to the employee. Benefits are paid up to 60% of the employee's salary after being disabled for 90 consecutive days.

Direct Deposit

The employee's payroll check is directly deposited into the bank of their choice.

Other Programs

Deferred compensation and membership in the Suncoast Credit Union are also available.

Paid Time Off & Holidays
