Job Duties/Responsibilities: As an Operating Systems Specialist with LAUSD, your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with technical and managerial staff, as well as end-users, to identify and solve operational challenges affecting district-wide operations.
  • Conceptualizing and implementing innovative operational designs for information systems and Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes.
  • Developing systems approaches that align with the district's objectives, employing advanced methodologies and techniques.
  • Offering recommendations for long-term development plans in specific data processing areas.
  • Assessing existing hardware and software solutions to determine feasibility and suitability for district needs.
  • Crafting technical specifications and policies to guide system development and implementation.
  • Evaluating new applications to assess their impact on existing systems, production, and software.
  • Potentially supervising other data processing personnel, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A bachelor s degree from a recognized college or university, preferably in computer science, information systems, telecommunications, data processing, electrical engineering, or industrial engineering. Graduate-level coursework in relevant fields is desirable.
  • Three years of hands-on experience in installing, maintaining, and modifying Linux and Microsoft operating system software, with at least two years in a professional capacity within a large computerized installation.
  • Proficiency in systems generation, SAN storage systems, enterprise backup/restore systems, dynamic storage and partition allocation processes, and dump analysis is preferred.
  • Familiarity with performance measurement, systems monitoring techniques, and the development of long-range plans for transitioning to new operating systems or cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure).
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and access to an automobile.

Desirable Qualifications: In addition to the minimum requirements, ideal candidates may possess:

  • A solid understanding of information technology hardware, software, and services.
  • Experience with operations research, statistical analysis, and complex information technology operating and application systems.
  • Knowledge of communication hardware and software, data systems analysis and design, and computer hardware capabilities.
  • Familiarity with various cloud-based infrastructure providers, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
  • Proficiency in distributed processing techniques, mathematical modeling, and higher-level programming languages.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the ability to express complex concepts clearly and concisely.
