This recruitment is for part-time Librarian I positions .All part-time Librarian I positions will include day, evening, and weekend hours.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is seeking a highly motivated, community-oriented and collaborative Public Services Librarians to provide excellent customer service and equalize opportunity for Montgomery County residents.

MCPL Librarians perform a variety of professional programs and services reflective of, and responsive to community needs and assets. Librarians develop and deliver inclusive and equitable, community-led programs and services. These positions represent MCPL within the community, building collaborative relationships, programs, and services in partnership with community members and organizations. Librarians also help to manage MCPL materials to meet the educational, recreational and information needs of the community. These positions provide customers with basic technological and in-depth informational assistance.

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:

The Librarian I at MCPL provides reference, readers advisory, and general assistance in support of the mission, vision, and values of Montgomery County Public Libraries.

Under supervision, the Librarian I will...
  • Promote and support MCPL's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion values with staff and customers. Centers the experiences of people and communities who are most affected by structural inequities when engaging in programming, partnerships, and information services work.
  • Provide professional librarian assistance in person and by telephone or chat to adults, teens, and children in locating print and electronic information resources, books, audiobooks, videos, and other resources
  • Plan and present programs for specific ages
  • Assist in weeding and merchandising materials in the branch collection
  • Recommend titles for purchase or replacement.
  • Provide one-to-one computer instruction and assistance as needed.
  • Participate on committees, and workgroups for projects, and initiatives for the library system.

All Librarian I positions will include day, evening, and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Master's degree in Library Science or Library Information Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

Applicants working toward the master's degree will be considered. Candidates will need to present an official transcript showing the degree has been earned before their first day of appointment.

Experience : None

Licensure : Employees will be responsible for maintaining appropriate level of Continuing Education Units (Contact Hours) to sustain State licensure requirements for this position.

Preferred Criteria

The applications of those individuals meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed to determine the extent, relevancy of training, and experience in the following areas:

  1. Providing direct service to customers.
  2. Programming virtually and/or in-person for a wide range of audiences that might include children, teens, adults, seniors, and the disability community.
  3. Providing formal or informal readers advisory.
  4. Familiarity with integrated library systems, online databases, and other electronic resources to locate material, place holds, search indices.
  5. Demonstrating and providing formal or informal instruction in the use of technology that might include software, apps, tablets, and eReaders.
