Controls Design Engineer


Job Details

The Controls Design Engineer reviews product and project designs to ensure they meet strict customer and technical requirements, ensures manufacturability of designed components, and performance of the end product. Additionally, the Controls Design Engineer will play a key role designing and improving Merit Controls product. This role requires a deep understanding of hardware and software systems, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, customers, and suppliers to ensure best in class product performance and successful project outcomes. The position name here reports directly to the Design Engineering Manager.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design Controls, SCADA, and Network products and components that provides best in class performance and meets or exceeds customer project requirements.
  • Review system design packages against technical standards and customer requirements, checking for performance, quality, consistency, and effectiveness of design.
  • Assist technical team in configuring and installing hardware and software systems, ensuring they operate efficiently and as intended. This will require onsite visits.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and implement necessary maintenance and upgrades.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation, including project templates for diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of systems and applications.
  • Ensure that systems and processes comply with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Adhere to quality management processes in accordance with Merit Controls' ISO 9001 certification.
  • Collaborate with the technical team and share information across the organization.
  • Understand and fulfill customer requirements, providing appropriate recommendations and briefings.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with customers, ensuring their satisfaction.
  • Update architecture and physical layout drawings based on site conditions (As-Builts).

Preferred Position Requirements:

Experience:

  • 5+ years experience as a Controls Engineer, SCADA Engineer, Industrial Controls Design Engineer or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of overall industrial systems, networks, and infrastructure components.
  • Proficiency in controls and SCADA systems. Experience in Control systems panel design/building a plus.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or equivalent software
  • Proficiency in operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux), virtualization technologies, and cloud services.
  • Familiarity with SEL RTAC platform a plus.
  • Background in Alternative Energy power management a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Familiarity with scripting/automation skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Relevant certifications are a plus.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or a related Engineering field.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR is preferred.
  • Certification in OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 is preferred.


Note: The inclusion of First Aid and CPR certification and OSHA certifications as preferred qualifications emphasizes the importance of safety and preparedness within the company Candidates who do not currently hold these certifications should be willing to obtain them within a reasonable timeframe after joining the company.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment.
  • Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary.
