Veterinary Assistant - Surgery

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is looking to add experienced veterinary technician assistants to our surgery department. Surgical Technician Assistants must have excellent restraint capabilities and must have good interpersonal skills to communicate with doctors, technicians, and clients. All positions require some evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. Full time positions carry a generous benefits package.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Restraining patients for physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and procedures
  • Ability to properly restrain patient for general anesthesia induction and intubation
  • Proper positioning for surgical preparation and radiography
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures for aseptic technique and sterility
  • Preparation and breakdown of the OR
  • Regular use and maintenance of autoclave and gas sterilizer
  • Cleaning and stocking of the surgical prep area and ORs
  • Cleaning/wrapping/packing, and sterilizing surgical instruments/equipment

Qualifications:
  • Previous veterinary experience is required (minimum 1 year)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Animal science degree or Animal Care certification preferred but not required
  • Ability to lift/drag/pull up to 35 lbs, and work on feet majority of shift
  • Professional, pleasant, engaged, clear communicator who is attentive and respectful to referring veterinarians, clients, and co-workers.
  • Must be able to follow direction, balance multiple tasks, be confident, and prioritize tasks appropriately.

OSVS is located in East Greenwich, RI with a satellite facility in Swansea, MA. OSVS is a 26,000 sf building with a very busy emergency service, a nationally-respected internship and residency program, and specialists in Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Avian/Exotics. Specialized equipment includes telemetry, endoscopy, CT scanner, ultrasound, and MRI.
