Working Title Southwest Stewardship Technician Role Title Admin and Office Spec III - 19013 Hiring Range Pay Range: up to $16.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. Location Washington - 191 Job Description The SW Stewardship Technician will assist with the management and interpretation of Natural Area Preserves (NAPs) in the Southwest Region of Virginia. This is a part-time, hourly position, up to 32 hours per week and no benefits other than workers compensation. The schedule is flexible and may include occasional weekend work. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own transportation and occasional use of either their personal vehicle or a state vehicle (as available) for travel to NAPs (mileage reimbursed). This position is supervised by the Southwest Regional Supervisor and based in Abingdon.

Duties:

- Assist DCR Natural Heritage Division stewardship staff with management of natural area preserves in the Southwest Region. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: fireline preparation, service on prescribed burn crews, management of invasive species, trail construction and maintenance, organizing and leading volunteer workdays, maintenance of equipment and shop facilities, trash removal, posting preserve boundaries, public environmental interpretation, and assistance with biological monitoring.

- Operation of vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and trailers, tractors, UTVs, ATVs, chainsaws, pesticide sprayers, hand tools, power tools, and prescribed fire equipment.

- Represent the Division of Natural Heritage at NAP and community events. Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with existing and potential partners.

Minimum Qualifications

- Ability to work independently and set priorities.

- Experience conveying information to a variety of people.

- Experience working in arduous field conditions.

- Experience with operation of vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks and trailers, tractors, UTVs, ATVs, chainsaws, pesticide sprayers, hand tools, power tools, and prescribed fire equipment. .

Preferred Qualifications

- Significant progress towards Bachelors degree in natural sciences or natural resources, or equivalent work experience.

- Vascular plant identification skills preferred.

- Certification in First Aid and CPR . Basic wildland firefighter training desired. Extensive experience serving on prescribed burn crews preferred.

Special Requirements **ABILITY TO REGULARLY WORK IN DIVERSE CONDITIONS INCLUDING EXPOSURE TO THE OUTDOORS , WEATHER IN ALL SEASONS , DUST , ANIMALS AND INSECTS . ABILITY TO PERFORM HEAVY MANUAL LABOR TO INCLUDE STANDING , BENDING , PULLING , CLIMBING , AND FREQUENT LIFTING UP TO 25 POUNDS .

Ability to pass the NWCG wildland fire work capacity test (arduous level).
