Job Description

Position Title: School Resource Officer/School Safety Coordinator

Department: District Administration

Reports to: Superintendent

Approved By: Board of Education

SUMMARY:

The School Resource Officer is an extension of the Superintendent and Principal's offices for administrative control and assignment. He/she will be a district resource for teachers, parents, and students; as well as a connection to community resources. The Resource Officer will develop plans to deal and react to potential dangerous situations to students and/or school employees, as well as offer training to district employees and students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)

  1. Obtain and maintain POST certification with full arrest authority
  2. Attend and pass the School Resource Officer Certification class
  3. Wear a Class "A" uniform while on campus during regular school day, unless otherwise authorized by Superintendent
  4. Report to campus by 7:30 a.m. and remain until 4:30 p.m. daily, with 30 minute lunch on campus; and two 10 minute breaks not to be combined and on campus. Variance of this schedule may be required for special events as requested by administration
  5. Attend extra-curricular activities, including, but not limited to: athletic events, dances, pep rallies, and graduation exercises. (Any exception must be approved in advance by school administration)
  6. Notification by 7:00 a.m. of absence due to illness
  7. Employment by other law enforcement agencies outside the scheduled contract hours and summer, when school is not in session, is permissible
  8. Develop plans and strategies to prevent and/ or minimize dangerous situations which may result in student unrest
  9. Develop plans to deal with and react to situations of student violence, hostage situations, bomb threats, and such events threatening the safety of students, staff, and visitors to campus
  10. Provide community-wide crime prevention presentations
  11. Meet with PTC and other school groups on campus to discuss requested topics, specifically conflict resolution and substance control areas
  12. Act as a resource for students and staff in law education and individual advisement as needed
  13. Create an environment supportive of interpersonal relationships between students and officers of the law
  14. Perform duties as a visible, active law enforcement figure on each campus addressing legal matters originating on assigned campus
  15. School Resource Officers assigned and trained as School Safety Coordinator(s) will comply with school safety provisions set forth by Missouri State Statute

CHAIN OF COMMAND:

In district-wide, extra-curricular, and on "call" events on district property, the SRO reports to the Superintendent (Assistant Superintendent in absence of Superintendent). At the individual building level, or at events not supervised by a Superintendent, the building principal (or his/her representative) receives reports from the SRO.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School Graduate or equivalent; POST Certification as a Police Officer with full arrest authority as well as maintenance of current School Resource Officer Certification in State of Missouri required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine and complex reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of patrons, employees, and students.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

POST Certification and SRO Certification in State of Missouri

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must have strong communication, computer and interpersonal skills, have ability to learn and utilize new software programs as systems are upgraded.

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand and reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must be able to transport from building to building or to local enforcement agencies.
