We are currently hiring for our NFL Flag Football league!

The District is seeking high energy, fun, reliable and service-oriented people to officiate various youth and adult sports. As a youth and adult sports official, you will not only serve as the enforcer of the rules, but will be a culture cultivator, an impartial on-court and/or on-field coach and an advocate for the program. Previous experience is desirable, but optional.

Typical Schedule: Saturdays between 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, 4-6 hour shifts. Occasionally weekday evening shifts.

Summary Description:
Under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, officiates a wide variety of sports programs, leagues, or tournaments including, but not limited to, flag football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball and street hockey; assists in setting up and breaking down playing fields/courts; directs and officiates games/activities and supervises participants; and works closely with District staff, coaches, scorekeepers and patrons to ensure the best possible operation(s) of youth and adult sports games/activities.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Officiate assigned sports games/activities as scheduled; move throughout the playing field or court to make effective and accurate calls.
  • Arrive on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by District guidelines; review, interpret, and enforce league rules, regulations, and District policies.
  • Set-up, break down, and clean up playing fields/courts, facilities, and equipment as necessary.
  • Keep score when necessary.
  • Assist with the distribution of supplies and other related material when necessary.
  • Provide a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from District policies and procedures manuals.
  • Promote and enforce safety procedures by implementing guidelines from District policy and procedures manuals.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, District personnel and the public; monitor behavior and play of participants.
  • Communicate with participants and the public; discuss program concerns and participation issues and provide solutions when appropriate.
  • Perform opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Attend, and participant at staff meetings and trainings.
  • Complete appropriate reports and forms as necessary.
  • Conduct work tasks safely and in compliance with District safety standards and the District Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
  • Perform field/court inspection and report any potentially unsafe conditions to the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator, or supervisor on duty.
  • Perform emergency procedures when needed.
  • May be required to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:
  • Officiating rules, techniques, and methods.
  • Basic arithmetic principles and practices (score calculations).
  • Game rules in a variety of sports such as but not limited to, flag football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball and street hockey.
  • Methods of scorekeeping.
  • Basic principles of high-quality customer service.
  • Basic operation of sports equipment including goals, nets, balls, bases and other related amenities.

Ability to:
  • Keep score and officiate games while paying attention and moving around the court or field at all times in order to make fair and accurate calls.
  • Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving routine situations such as responding to customer or employee problems/complaints, supervising and activities, caring for participant injuries and resolving conflicts between participants or volunteer coaches to ensure safety.
  • Comprehend and prepare reports such as score cards/sheets, accident, incident, and behavior reports, emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.
  • Position body properly to make an accurate call. Remain poised in high-pressure situations.
  • Use good judgement in game situations.
  • Remain consistent when making calls in a game or match.
  • Think clearly, quickly, and accurately in emergencies.
  • Communicate professionally, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Previous sports officiating experience is desirable.

License or Certificate:
Required to hold current certification in Standard First Aid, CPR, AED, and Concussion protocol training or obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.

Additional Requirements:
Department of Justice (DOJ) background check.
A clear tuberculosis screening is required.

Sick Leave: All part-time and seasonal employees will be issued forty (40) hours of sick leave upon their date of hire and reinstated every one year anniversary to be available for the following twelve months not to exceed a 40 hour cap. Sick leave may not be used until after 90 days of the original hire date.
