Position Overview:


The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys (BWS) is a tuition-free private, Episcopal school for boys in Kindergarten 5th grade located in S.E. DC, striving to alter the educational and social trajectory of children from historically underserved communities, preparing them for leadership and service in their communities and well beyond.


BWS is seeking a dedicated Lead Elementary School Teacher to join our team. As a Lead Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience of our students, particularly focusing on the development and empowerment of black and brown boys. We are looking for a passionate educator who is committed to culturally relevant teaching and pedagogy. As well, we are seeking someone who has a positive outlook, high level of emotional intelligence, and an ability to connect with others and build relationships. A deep love for and understanding of educating elementary school boys is essential, as is working with our scholars in ways that are affirming, joyful, and supportive.


Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans that cater to the diverse learning needs of black and brown boys.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and respected.
  • Incorporate culturally relevant content and materials into the curriculum to promote a sense of identity, belonging, and pride among students.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary projects and initiatives that promote holistic learning experiences.
  • Assess student progress regularly and provide timely feedback to students and their families.
  • Establish positive relationships with students, families, and community members to support the academic and socioemotional development of students.
  • Stay informed about current trends and best practices in education, particularly as they relate to teaching black and brown boys.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to continuously enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Adhere to school policies and procedures, including those related to classroom management, safety, and student conduct.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • At least 3 years previous classroom teaching experience working with elementary school-aged students, preferably in an urban setting.
  • Deep understanding of culturally relevant teaching practices and their impact on student learning and development.
  • Passion for educating and empowering black and brown boys.
  • A proven commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in the elementary school setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and learning.
