DESCRIPTION

The Senior Manager of Volunteer Engagement at Capital Area Food Bank plays a pivotal role in the organization's mission to alleviate hunger in the Washington, D.C. metro area. This leadership position is responsible for developing and executing strategies to engage volunteers effectively in DC and VA, ensuring a positive and impactful experience for all volunteers. Provides strategic planning, design and implementation support to operations for volunteer management, and ensures that implementation and defined activities are carried out in accordance with specified objectives. Monitor and evaluate program activities and data to formulate and implement improvements ensuring program objectives and needs are met. The Senior Manager is a creative, solutions-oriented professional who wields a deep understanding of volunteer management and engagement.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer Engagement and Recruitment: 50%

  • Develop and maintain a strategy to recruit, retain, engage, recognize, and maximize the impact of up to 25,000 annual volunteers in our DC and VA distribution centers.
  • Serve as liaison for problem solving, and operational issues.
  • Identify volunteer programs and services needs or gaps.
  • Determine if individuals or groups can be best utilized inside the CAFB distribution centers, in the demonstration garden, off-site with a partner agency, at a special event.
  • Ensure that all volunteers are provided with an orientation to CAFB as well as training for the specific tasks or projects they will complete at the beginning of each volunteer shift. Provide a recap of work accomplished and quantify impact on the CAFB mission and community after each volunteer experience at the end of each volunteer shift.
  • Manage and optimize the availability of volunteers and donated food to ensure that excessive food donations do not accrue in the warehouse and that volunteers have enough work to do and a positive volunteer experience.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure volunteers are well informed about the organization s work and impact.
  • Collaborate with staff to create volunteer activities and programs.
  • Work with Marketing and Development staff to promote Food Bank merchandise sales and donation opportunities to volunteers in a thoughtful manner.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Development Departments to support corporate volunteer events.
  • Manage and disseminate the Volunteer Calendar for all warehouse, events, special events, and programmatic volunteer opportunities.
  • Coordinate court-ordered volunteers.
  • Plan and manage departmental budget.
  • Conduct tours to volunteer groups as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Communication: 30%

  • Develop and manage volunteer communication strategies and tactics (phone calls, email) that support and cultivate current and prospective individual and corporate donors.
  • Confirms volunteer groups daily.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other departments that utilize volunteers.

Data Analysis: 20%

  • Manage volunteer management system to run reports and analyze volunteer activity.
  • Develop plans and assessment tools to track and analyze data.
  • Monitor and track survey responses, compile data, and reports out weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually to relevant parties.
  • Uses data and keeps up to date on local volunteer landscape to identify trends and areas for improvement in the volunteer program.
  • Directly supervises volunteer team and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Monitor staff development needs and serve as a coach to the volunteer team.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervises volunteer team and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Monitor staff development needs and serve as a coach to the volunteer team.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • 4-year college degree or 5 years relevant work experience required.
  • 2-3 years of management experience; Nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; Knowledge of Salesforce preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical activities involve sitting for 80% of the workday. Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Must travel to sites in DC and VA. This role is fully on-site.
  • This position will primarily work in an office and warehouse setting but may also help lead volunteer-intensive special events at community festivals, food events, tradeshows, and similar off-site locations.
  • Frequent exposure to changes in temperature conditions.
  • This position works flexible and extended hours when necessary for CAFB special events; attendance at annual gala required.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce preferred.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to speak in public; exceptional customer service skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Normal office environment, with frequent tight deadlines. Some work may take place in our warehouse distribution center, or at our partner agencies.
