WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

MCDOT seeks an Engineer Technician II for its Sign and Marking Team in the Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations The worksite is located at 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Maryland.

This position is responsible for thoroughly investigating signing and marking traffic safety service requests (SRs) in the field and using ArcGIS to create accurate and detailed work orders based on the guiding principles of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the national signing and marking standard. The vast majority of the SRs are time sensitive MC311 calls with a short turnaround timeline. The employee is required to create work orders expeditiously in order to properly address such traffic safety calls in a timely manner.To create quality work orders, the employee must have strong knowledge and familiarity with MdMUTCD standards as well as State and County signing and marking installation policies and procedures. This position requires developing the necessary layout, using Flexi software, for the fabrication of special and non-standard traffic signs. The County's traffic signs are frequently struck and knocked down by motorists, resulting in physical safety concerns. The position is responsible for the elimination of such physical safety concerns until the damaged or knocked down signs and sign supports are completely removed and replaced.

WHO WE ARE SEEKING :

The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, possesses appropriate computer skills and be detail oriented. The candidate must be able to meet project deadlines, coordinate and manage deliverables for multiple projects simultaneously and work independently on a variety of difficult and complex project and task-related actions.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

The position REQUIRES the possession of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license and the ability to drive a county vehicle to visit sites for fieldwork such as investigations and surveillance and to perform other work at locations outside the office such as travel to field locations to perform, observations, evaluations, and assessments as well as meet with residents and attend evening meetings.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

The anticipated salary range in hiring for this position at the Engineer Tech I level is: $52,456 - $67,445; or if at the Engineer Tech II level: $54,583 - $70,343.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

If Filled at Engineer Technician I level: Considerable (three (3) years) experience in an applicable technical field that has required the application of principles of physical science and mathematics to assist engineers in solving civil, traffic or environmental engineering problems.

If Filled at Engineer Technician II level: Thorough (five (5) years) experience in an applicable technical field that has required the application of principles of physical science and mathematics to the solution of civil, traffic, fire protection or environmental engineering problems.

ALL LEVELS - EDUCATION :

Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

ALL LEVELS - EQUIVALENCY :

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

ALL LEVELS - LICENSE :

Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Preferred Criteria

There are no Preferred Criteria . All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting the minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Experience installing traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Experience creating signing and marking work orders using ArcGIS.
  • Experience using Microstation Microsoft, Excel spreadsheet, and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience interpreting, comprehending, and implementing guidelines, specifications, policies, and procedures.
