Job Duties

The Court of Appeals of Virginia is seeking applicants for two full-time judicial clerkships with Judge Lisa M. Lorish to start in August 2025. The position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, although occasional travel to other locations in Virginia is required. Please indicate in your cover letter whether you would prefer to clerk for one or two years.

Judge Lorish is seeking candidates who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and can contribute an assortment of different experiences, qualities, and skill sets. She encourages all interested candidates to apply or reach out with questions!

Job duties:
Prepare memoranda for Judge Lorish by analyzing and summarizing briefs and case materials on appeal to the Court of Appeals of Virginia, including case documents and exhibits, trial transcripts, and related documents
Compose draft court orders for approval
Check citations and quote check appellate briefs and pleadings
Collaborate with other clerks and members of the court to resolve cases

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements:
Graduation by spring 2025 from an ABA-accredited law school, or membership in good standing of the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state

Skills/experiences applicants can highlight:
Prior legal or internship experience in criminal, civil, workers' compensation, and/or administrative agency law
Knowledge of the trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and rules utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Proficiency in online legal research and communication
Organizational skills and attentiveness to detail
Ability to handle a high volume of materials while meeting critical deadlines
