Environmental Field Technician

Weaver Consultants Group (WCG), an environmental, civil, and geotechnical engineering consulting firm, is seeking a temporary employee to assist our Environmental Practice Group in the Chicagoland Area. We are seeking a well-qualified and motivated Environmental Field Technician who will thrive in a fast-paced and challenging work environment. We are seeking candidates for this temporary position to conduct environmental oversight for earthwork being conducted at a large railyard in the Chicagoland area. The oversight will be conducted on a daily basis (typically Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend days as needed) beginning in June 2024. The daily work will be conducted for approximately two to three months, and additional intermittent oversight may be needed for up to an additional two additional months. Our culture appeals to individuals interested in providing technically excellent services in a highly responsive manner focused on meeting our client's project-specific needs.

Primary Responsibilities

We are seeking an Environmental Field Technician with a relevant technical degree and, preferably, experience in environmental field work and/or construction oversight. This role is a temporary, field-based position to conduct oversight of earthwork activities that will involve the following tasks:

  • Tracking and detailed documentation of soil movement
  • Screening soils with a photoionization detector (PID)
  • Maintaining effective communication with on-site subcontractors and WCG team
  • Potential collection of environmental soil samples for laboratory analysis
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Ability to travel daily within the Chicagoland area
  • Willing to accommodate construction schedules, including 10 to 12 hours days, and occasional work on weekends
  • Willing to work outside in a variety of climates
  • Access to a reliable vehicle, valid Driver's License, and safe driving record
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to health and safety protocols
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification
  • eRailSafe certification (to be provided by WCG)
  • Must own or be willing to purchase steel-toed boots (additional personal protective equipment to be provided by WCG)
  • 1-2 years professional experience in the environmental field is strongly preferred, but candidates with a strong educational background and less professional experience will also be considered

Position will be compensated on an hourly basis with overtime eligibility for hours worked over 40 within each calendar week. The specific job schedule will be determined by the schedule of the earthwork project. The work is anticipated to be 40 to 50 hours per week for at least two months beginning in June 2024, with the potential for intermittent work for up to two additional months. As a result, the work schedule will not be evenly distributed throughout the length of the contract. Some weeks will likely result in overtime pay, while other weeks may comprise less than 40 hours. The ideal candidate is located in the Chicagoland area.

The qualified person would generally work alone, reporting to and regularly communicating with project managers. Senior staff members will provide initial training and support/guidance/mentorship, as needed.

Strong candidates that perform well during the temporary employment period may be considered for a permanent position, though it is not guaranteed.
