Position Information

HIRING BONUS! Camp staff will receive a gross bonus of up to $550.
This announcement is specific to the Creative Arts Camp. If interested in other camp program areas, you must apply directly to those positions.

The (DPR) Creative Arts Camp is seeking Counselors, Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and Instructors for temporary summer employment to support camp programs by planning and leading a variety of art experiences for children ages 5-8, 8-11, or 12-16 (depending on the camp).

Staff must commit to working from June 17 - August 9 (core camp dates). Additional weeks from August 12 - August 23 may also be available. Training will begin in mid to late May through June, which includes online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. Several positions are available, and hours vary.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT (SRA) I @ $15.00/Hourly
Assisting with leading recreation activities, camp program operations, and behavior management of participants.
Minimum requirements: Does not require a High School Diploma.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT (SRA) II @ $16.00/HourlyAssisting with managing recreation activities, behavior management of participants, and evaluations of the activities.
Minimum requirements: Experience working with youth or administering summer camp/recreation programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT (RA) III @ $18.72/HourlyPerforming supervisory and administrative duties, including managing recreation activities, and processing participant and program evaluations.
Minimum requirements: High school/GED, plus some experience working with youth or administering recreation programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT (RA) IV @ $22.54/HourlyDirecting summer camp programs, developing curriculum, and performing administrative duties.
Minimum requirements: High school/GED, considerable experience administering recreation programs, including some experience leading/supervising recreation programs.
* Substitution:Completion of some college coursework may substitute for the experience requirement.

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR II (Ceramics): @ $24.44/Hourly
Provides specialized instruction in ceramics, including hand-building, wheel throwing and glazing fundamentals for students ages 12-16. Provides technical support for the ceramic's studio, including kiln management, mixing glazes and general maintenance. Performs administrative duties and develops curriculum, lesson plans and instructions.
Minimum Requirements: High school/GED, plus 800 hours of technical Art experience (includes any work, volunteer, or formal art participation). Must have 50 hours as an instructor.

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR III (Ceramics): @ $28.24/Hourly
Provides specialized instruction in ceramics, including hand-building, wheel throwing and glazing fundamentals for students ages 12-16. Provides technical support for the ceramic's studio, including kiln management, mixing glazes and general maintenance. Performs supervisory and administrative duties, including directs summer program, develop curriculum and lesson plans.
Minimum Requirements:High school/GED, plus 1200 hours of technical Art experience (includes any work, volunteer, or formal art participation). Must have 50 hours as an instructor.

* Instructor Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not substitute the instructing hours.
Selection Criteria

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, and reliable transportation, including the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps;
  • Teaching art and working with children;
  • Experience/willingness to work with individuals with disabilities; and/or
  • For Ceramics Instructors: Wheel throwing, hand building, kiln management, and glaze application experience.

Special Requirements

If selected, all summer staff may be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check.
  • Provide references, which may be included in this application.
  • Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
  • Attend all required trainings, wear a uniform, and ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for a prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Possess a driver's license and complete a successful driving license record check.
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for the Camp Director or other designated positions.

Additional Information

Work Hours: May vary between 35-40 hours per week, 7-8 hours a day between the hours of 8am-6pm.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave: Vacation leave is earned at the rate of five hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases gradually until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Paid parental and family leave benefits are also offered. Leave is pro-rated for part-time employees.

Holidays: There are eleven paid fixed holidays each year, as well as two floating holidays. Initial allotment of floating holidays may vary based on when you are hired.

Health and Dental Insurance: Four group health insurance plans are offered - a health maintenance organization, two plans with in-network only coverage, and a high-deductible plan with in and out-of-network coveerage, along with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Group dental insurance is also offered, with two options for coverage. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. The County also contributes to the HSA.

Life Insurance: Basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance may be purchased for yourself, spouse, and/or children.

Retirement: The County retirement program is made up of three parts: a defined benefit (pension) plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. The County also contributes to this plan. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)). The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to save for retirement on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your pay. A variety of investment options are available for the 401(a) and 457 plans.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health care, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part-time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
