Job Summary

The Bridge and Structures Laborer is responsible for receiving daily direction from the Bridge and Structures Foreman or as designated by Bridges and Structures Supervisor. The incumbent is accountable for maintaining bridges, culverts, retaining walls and related structures on the related territory.

Major Responsibilities
Perform repairs to bridges, culverts, retaining walls and related structures
Perform concrete work such as form erection, reinforcement installation, mixing and finishing
Perform steel work such as welding, fabricating, bolting, rivet busting, torch cutting and erecting
Perform timber work such as framing and fastening
Perform physical labor
Operate hand and power tools as well as heavy equipment
Read and comprehend blueprints
Estimate material quantities
Respond to emergency calls
Working Conditions
Shift work, including day and night shifts and weekends when necessary
Work is primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions as well as remote locations
Available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences
Frequent travel within northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania
Work at heights and in confined spaces
General construction aptitude including working with and around power tools, heavy equipment, etc.
Requirements
Experience working with construction materials including concrete, steel and timber
Experience handling and safely operating construction tools and materials
High School Diploma or equivalent
Trade School or Apprenticeship Program*
Must acquire Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 60 days of employment
Identifies risks and anticipates impacts to ensure a safe and secure environment
Shares timely information within and across functions to get things done effectively
Makes informed and timely decisions
Tracks metrics and is accountable
Responds with agility
Deals with pressure and change by staying calm to quickly adapt to changes
Knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautions

Training

An important component of development remains on-the-job training. Formal classroom training is normally delivered at CN s Homewood, Illinois Campus for one week and consists of rules class, fall protection and CPR/first aid.
