Data Science Intern

Job Details

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Data Science Intern to support an exciting project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the summer of 2024. The aim of this project is to develop a unified view from both atmospheric and oceanic sides of key variable pairs across atmosphere and ocean, such as surface pressure and sea surface anomaly (SLA); winds and currents; evaporation and sea surface temperature (SST), etc. We will collocate available satellite data products and NASA atmospheric and oceanic reanalysis data to individual TC tracks to build a unified view of atmospheric and oceanic variables. This unified approach is likely to provide dynamical relationships across the air-sea interface that would improve our understanding of such complex weather events and NASA systems.Intern Responsibilities include:* Gain solid data science skills.* Learn and improve python programming.* Understanding of NASA satellite and earth system model data.* Develop an earth system perspective view of the atmosphere and ocean.* Validate datasets against satellite datasets.* Aid in identification of systematic weakness in models that could be improved with earth system modeling, observations, and analysisRequirements:* Undergraduate student/Graduate student with a background in Computer science/physical sciences/engineering* Experience with Python programming.* Permanent Residency or US citizenship required.EOE, including disability/vetsPhysical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
