Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, a leader in Cancer care, is seeking a Full Time Lead Medical Dosimetrist & Physics Specialist for our Radiation office in Fairfax Virginia. Bachelor's degree in a clinical or scientific related discipline desired. Experience in oncology is preferred.

SCOPE: Works under direct supervision of a qualified Medical Physicist to maintain quality assurance programs for radiation producing equipment and patient treatments. Supervises the dosimetry staff. Acts in a capacity to schedule coverage and direct planning goals. Organizes clinical treatment trials and procedures. Duties may involve multiple sites. Functions as the director of the ongoing education of new dosimetrists and assists in the oversight of the technical development and abilities of the radiation therapists. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Independently creates radiation therapy treatment plans using computer software and various imaging modalities.

* Interprets and delineates anatomy and anatomical positioning on various imaging modalities.

* Performs or assists in the planning of the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices.

* Performs or assists in the planning of the production of moulds, casts, and other immobilization devices.

* May assist in intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these treatments.

* Supervises dosimetry staff, oversees the development and training of all simulation and dosimetry staff, and ensures dosimetrists timely goals for certification.

* Assures Dosimetry needs are met and schedules coverage for multiple clinic format as needed.

* Teaches applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students and residents, as assigned.

* Provides physics and technical support to the Medical Physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation oncology equipment.

* May perform quality assurance procedures on treatment planning system, linear accelerator, and brachytherapy device with minimal supervision.

* Shares responsibility for Quality Assurance programs on patient plans for Special Procedures (to include but not limited to IMRT, SRS, Brachytherapy), electron beam cutout factor measurements and in-vivo dosimetry investigations and follow-up.

* Shares responsibility for quality control and quality assurance programs of the radiation producing machines and treatment planning computers as specifically designed by the Medical Physicist.

* May supervise, perform, or assist in the application of specific methods of dosimetry including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurement as directed by the Medical Physicist.

* Accurately documents treatment planning and quality assurance tasks.

* Accurately codes for technical treatment planning and quality assurance tasks.

* Performs general computerized tasks, such as word processing, using spreadsheets, moving and altering files and directories, and performing data backup.

* Supervises the therapist staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including: the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment variables.

* Performs weekly chart reviews.

* Assists in determining the need for, specifies, and accesses dosimetry and treatment planning equipment concerning decisions related to the proposed purchase of capital equipment.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 7 years dosimetry experience post CMD with recommendation by a qualified Medical Physicist. Must maintain certification and continuing education requirements as outlined by appropriate professional organizations.
