**Duties**

* Provides packing and repacking in support of wildland fire operations.

* Collates, assembles, inventories, and build kits from individual components according to National Fire Equipment System (NFES) standards.

* Determines packing configuration, assembles items according to kit component packing lists, and inspects for accuracy.

* Prepares items and equipment for storage and shipment via various modes of transportation, including air-cargo.

* Arranges, seals, and tags items and equipment that requiring specialized handling. Packs tools, materials and communications equipment using a wide variety of standard packing methods and techniques include items of a large, heavy or fragile.

* Selects the packing materials taking into account such factors as size, type, weight, fragility, method of transportation, storage facility and final destination.

* Performs both standard and specialized packaging, collates kits from components and uses various protective/cushioning techniques.

* Repairs and rehabilitates fire supplies and equipment to NFES.

* Uses and maintains various types of equipment for the purpose of packaging such as heat sealers, hand sealers, hand powered and mechanical shrink wrap.

* Operates a variety of material handling equipment and vehicles such as forklifts and pallet jacks.

* Utilizes an automated inventory program to query storage locations and perform transactions.

* You must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests, and pass periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel, commensurate with current incident management qualification.

* You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.

* This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work during peak fire season.

* May require completion of a one year probationary period.

* Applicants appointed to this position must POSSESS and maintain a valid state driver's license.

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining applicant's qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of Packer WG-7002-06 without more than normal supervision.

**Physical Effort**: Performs work on hard surfaces and in areas that require frequent standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts, equipment and packed containers that weigh up to 40 pounds (8 Kilograms) on a recurring basis. The heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Incumbent is required to be available to work long hours on short notice and be available for duty on weekends, holidays and nights as required.

**Working Conditions**: Typically works in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Occasionally works outside or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. The work is sometimes dusty, dirty, and greasy. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts scrapes and bruises. When working with packaging products, chemicals or petroleum products ma be exposed to noxious fumes, skin irritants and flammable chemicals. In certain work situations involving hazardous materials, wears protective clothing, respirators, and other specialized protective devices in addition to their basic protective equipment (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes, and earplugs).
