Auto Maintenance Mechanic


Job Details

MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our ship yard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Complete routine vehicle inspections and maintenance on company vehicles, cranes and forklift equipment.
  • Makes necessary general repairs or replace parts as needed. Tasks may include oil changes, tuning the engine, refilling all fluids, examining belts and hoses, brake setting, etc.
  • Start-up and shutdown equipment in accordance with company safety procedures for machine activation and shutdown and in line with OSHA requirements as directed.
  • Coordinates with facilities department personnel to obtain needed parts and ensures timely installation.
  • Document maintenance completed on all vehicles.
  • Inform supervisors of repairs that may need to be outsourced or escalated to more experienced mechanic due to the specialized nature of repair needed.
  • Assist with refueling company vehicles as needed.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written guidance.
  • Notifies supervisor of any safety or equipment issues.
  • Follow all safety guidelines for mechanical and shipyard safety. To include HAZMAT handling and Personal Protective Equipment use.
  • Follow basic procedures and paperwork documentation requirements for various mechanical repairs.
  • Keeps work area clean.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learns additional responsibilities and skills associated with the trade.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have three years of related work experience as fleet mechanic, or auto mechanic.
  • Vocational school or technical college training in mechanical or automotive engineering preferred.
  • Requires a minimum of one year of experience working on forklifts and cranes, and the ability to obtain a license for forklift and JLG manlifts.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of how to use repair tools, equipment, and testing machinery.
  • Must be familiar with hydraulic pumps and machinery.
  • Must be able to perform tasks independently after given specific instructions.
  • Drivers License and Good Driving Record Required.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Must be steady, reliable worker
