This recruitment is being conducted to fill one regular full-time position in Aquatics and one limited term position in Youth Services. The resulting eligible candidate list may be used to fill additional full, part-time, or limited term openings that may occur in the future. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:
The Successful Candidate will possess:
  • At least two years assisting with customer programs, activities, facilities, and the organization of recreation activities
  • At least two years experience providing exceptional customer service
  • Experience using a variety of computer applications
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Experience building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Depending on assignment, the following are examples of essential job duties:
  • Assist in the promotion of recreation activities through a wide variety of promotional media
  • respond to requests, complaints and inquiries from class instructors, rental groups and the public
  • respond appropriately to emergency situations, providing crowd control and building evacuation, when needed
  • write incident reports
  • access the registration and facility reservation systems for information about facility use
  • monitor room set-up and routine maintenance of facilities during evening and weekend hours
  • open and close recreation centers
  • arm and disarm alarm systems, as appropriate
  • assist in the planning and supervision of recreational activities at recreation centers
  • keep accurate records of attendance at recreation programs or events
  • monitor compliance with applicable City, County, and State laws and ordinances, and City policies and procedures


Additional Duties that may be performed:
  • provide information to the public about recreation programs and services
  • register people for classes
  • answer phones
  • assist in setting up and taking down furniture and equipment
  • assist with minor maintenance of facilities
  • collect and record daily revenues
  • perform related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Knowledge of: Recreation site supervision, including coordination with special instructors; problem solving techniques; rules of English grammar, punctuation and spelling sufficient to prepare incident reports and complete daily logs; record keeping practices; and general maintenance and custodial care standards for facilities.

Ability to: Apply common sense and good judgment to difficult or unusual situations; work effectively with a minimum of direct supervision; communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing; follow written and oral directions; monitor observance of laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and safety and health standards; exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with people; provide indirect supervision to assigned staff and volunteers; prepare reports; maintain accurate records; establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; perform basic arithmetic; operate a computer terminal; suggest rules and policies; and enforce maintenance standards.

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience - Sufficient experience in the delivery of recreation or leisure services to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above is desirable.

Education - Equivalent to completion of college level coursework in recreation, public administration, physical education, special education or another field related to the job duties.

License and Certificate: This classification may require the use of a personal or City vehicle while conducting City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C, California Driver's license, OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled and unscheduled visits to various locations in the City which may or may not be reachable by public transportation.

Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desirable.

Selection Process:

Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications based on a screening of the application materials and supplemental questionnaire will be invited to continue in a selection process that may consist solely of an application screening, or may include an oral appraisal interview, assessment center, or another activity selected by the Human Resources Department. An eligible list will be established as a result of this selection process and may be used to fill future vacancies.

Working Conditions:
Incumbents assigned to this classification work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs, including working evenings and weekends and shifting assignments as program needs change. Work is generally performed indoors in a climate controlled environment. Incumbents use vision to ensure rooms have been set up properly, and hearing to test sound equipment for proper functioning and to respond to the intercom paging system. Incumbents must operate a computer keyboard to access the registration and facility reservation systems; respond physically to emergencies quickly and appropriately; lift, move, set up and remove tables, sound equipment, and chairs weighing up to 50 pounds; and lift and move supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
