Purpose of Job:

The Clinical Pharmacist Specialist manages and develops clinical services of the department to support a high level of patient care and appropriate utilization of drug therapy through direct patient care activities, clinical services administration and staff education.

This position is Full Time Monday-Friday 40 hours per week

Job Responsibilities:


  • Reviews pharmacy and organizational policies and procedures in regard to drug use and departmental readiness for regulatory audits.
  • Serves as a clinical specialist resource for pharmacists, nurses and physicians.
  • Provides clinical staff development services and instruction within area of expertise to pharmacy staff. Assists with evaluation of staff clinical activities and interventions.
  • Acts as a PGY1 pharmacy Residency Program Director:
  • Ensures compliance with ASHP Accreditation Standards for the Pharmacy Residency Program
  • Coordinates, recruits and interviews candidates for the Pharmacy Residency Program
  • Documents clinical activities that include, but are not limited to, disease-state management, general pharmacotherapeutic monitoring, pharmacokinetic monitoring, ADEs, education, and other patient care activities

    Promotes the use of the formulary, when possible, but coordinates procurement of non-formulary drugs when necessary.


    • Works closely with Pharmacy director and participates in quality assurance programs and clinical pathway development to enhance pharmaceutical care.
    • Participates in the development of medication use management programs within Howard University Hospital including clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs.
    • Assists in the preparation and presentation of other information needed by various committees such as Adverse Drug Reactions, Medication Use Indicators, Medication Errors and special topic of concern as needed.
    • Works with Pharmacy director to develop advanced clinical services including pharmacy-managed protocols and programs
    • Actively serves as mentor and preceptor for clinical staff pharmacists, pharmacy students, and pharmacy residents through example, training, and education.
    • Assists with the coordination of the organization's drug utilization program, and develops department-wide initiatives to ensure that pharmacists monitor the use of medication in relation to patient's age, height, weight, sex and disease state to assure appropriate utilization, and interacts with the staff to suggest therapeutic alternatives that are safe, cost effective, and evidence-based.
    • Acts as an educational resource by developing and presenting programs to the pharmacy and hospital staff that promote the safe and effective use of medications.
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

      Qualified candidates will possess:

      • Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
      • Completion of a PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in a specialized clinical area from an accredited program.
      • Registration as a pharmacist in the District of Columbia or eligibility for registry through reciprocity. BPS certification preferred.
