We are looking for a talented Global Research Manager to join our Pittsburgh R&D team!

Description

1. Reports:

Direct reports: 7 global research engineer staff

Indirect reports: 9 R&D technical support staff who to report to senior-most engineer in the team

Total team size of 16

2. Dimensions of Position:

Responsible for all projects within the Flow Control

The position will help ensure the implementation and success of new product development projects which determine the value of new (5 yrs post launch) products sold each year, i.e. >50 MGBP.

The position will help ensure the success of potential cost savings projects, e.g. approximately 4 MGBP savings per year.

The position will provide recommendations to resolving applications and manufacturing issues associated with supporting the existing business, >500 MGBP.

Accountable for the activities of the Global Research Team which includes 7 engineers and 9 technical support.

3. Key Result Areas:

Manages the Global Research team composition and output through performance management and recruiting/hiring

Manages Engineers by mentoring and training; directs their research work when needed, offering ideas and connecting them to external resources

Manages technicians and coordinates the work within the laboratory ensuring best practices are established and followed and required equipment is available

Maintains portfolio of research activities, measuring resources applied and applying resources in line with priorities of the business

Administrates and approves product property specifications for new and existing products

Acts as product technology expert for Slide Gate and Purge Refractory including raw materials, formulations, properties and applications

Monitors technology trends inside and outside of field of interest and participates in conferences to acquire inspiration and an external network of contacts

Requirements

1. Qualifications:

Master s Degree in Materials or related engineering field required. Ph.D. is desirable.

2. Experience:

5-10 years practical experience in an R&D setting required: Refractory, Ceramic or similar/related Materials Science field

3-5 years leadership experience required: leading a team, delivering results, resource and stake-holder management

3-5 years product development exposure required: NPI processes, translation of product objectives to technical ones, prototype development and industrialization

3-5 years management experience preferred (not required): performance management, project or portfolio management, administrative aspects of people management

3. Knowledge/Skills:

Must have a strong technical foundation including thorough understanding of materials science principles and ability to understand and challenge the conclusions of others

Must have a good understanding of new product development processes and challenges

Must demonstrate leadership skills sufficient to lead and challenge a team of technical experts and maximize output

Must demonstrate potential to develop people management skills such as team building, motivating, decision quality and personal learning

4. Problem Solving & Complexity

Must resolve personality and opinion conflicts among group members

Must solve and mentor others to solve complicated technical problems requiring a good understanding of customer and internal processes

Decisions referred to manager include the determination of overall project priority and how to balance the optimization of a product with the timeline required to deliver it
