Scope of Position

The Lead Surgical Technologist functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Operating Rooms of the Perioperative Services at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institutes (OSUCCC-James). The surgical teams reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Registered Nurse (RN), Surgical Technologist (ST) Student Surg Tech (SST), Anesthesia Technician and Office Assistants, provide patient care and supportive services that are directed towards achievement of maximizing patient care outcomes, improving customer service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization, and decreasing costs. Patients and their family will experience the benefits of patient focused care through the integrated skills of all care team members.

Position Summary

The Lead Surgical Technologist performs technical skills related to intraoperative patient care. The Lead Surgical Technologist is generally assigned to perform the scrub role in various surgical procedures and performs routine unit tasks. They provide emergency care measures as appropriate and assist in meeting the patient's emotional needs. The Lead Surgical Technologist follows universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all other infection control standards. They provide for safety/security of self and others and follow special precautions as related to patient care. They maintain a clean/organized perioperative unit. The Lead Surgical Technologist promotes a positive attitude to staff, families, and patient/guests as well as maintains patient confidentiality. The Lead Surgical Technologist performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care, meets hospital continuing education and certification requirements, upholds goals and objectives of the Department of Perioperative Services. The Lead Surgical Technologist serves as a resource for various service lines. The Lead Surgical Technologist contributes to organizational effectiveness and demonstrates career growth and development. The Lead Surgical Technologist works variable rotating shifts as assigned. Call is assigned on a rotating basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a high school graduate or possess GED, and must have completed formal Surgical Technology Training Program. Certification Required. Minimum of 2 years related work experience required.
