Job Summary:
The NYA Security Guard, Maintainer, ensures a safe environment at and within the New York Aquarium by ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of people, and WCS animal by securing and preventing damage to WCS buildings, objects, assets, and property. The Maintainer, Guard, acts as the shift lead and may assign posts, make rounds to assure coverage, provide for relief duty, answer inquiries and direct and train other Security staff.
The Security Guard, Maintainer investigates, reports, and takes appropriate ameliorating action of observed irregularities occurring on New York Aquarium grounds or within buildings and facilities; and takes appropriate action to stop individuals who violate WCS rules or trespass.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Respond immediately to calls for security personnel assistance from management, staff, guests, general public, or public services agencies.
  • Patrol, monitor, and inspect NYA grounds and facilities (interior and exterior of buildings, structures, access points, and the interior and exterior of fencing that surround NYA grounds) on a continual basis in accordance with NYA Procedures. Utilize the guard tour verification system, cameras, radios, and WCS-provided security tools and equipment.
  • Effectively communicate within the security team, other departments and outside agencies concerning security and safety matters. This includes completing timely and proper paperwork, and transfer of knowledge to oncoming security shifts on a daily basis.
  • Respond immediately to fire and burglar alarms, intruders, and any other security or safety-related events at the facility in accordance with WCS and NYA policies and procedures.
  • Provide and control access to secured areas, staff fixed guard posts, and control ingress and egress to the NYA, its buildings and structures, and their interiors.
  • Interact with and assist guests with questions, directions, and security-related or staff matters.
  • Observe, report and take appropriate immediate corrective action of observed irregularity to the appropriate supervisor/manager and public safety agency. Document incidents and observed irregularities and the action taken in response on appropriate forms.
  • Respond to emergencies and incidents involving guests, staff, or other persons and implement appropriate responses in accordance with WCS and NYA policies and procedures. Responding to and implementing appropriate response action to weather-based hazards and other unplanned emergencies.
  • Enforce WCS rules, regulations, and standards of conduct for staff, guests, and others while on site. Inform individuals of violations and take appropriate action to curtail violations. Document these incidents and report to NYA, Appear in Court as required pertaining to a WCS work-related matters.
  • Perform all additional duties and directives in the NY Aquarium's Standard Operations Security Guide and directives issued by the Security Department management team. Performing sporadic assignments significant and necessary to the security department's purpose and role.
  • Perform work and assignments independently or as per the instructions of the security department director, and manager in a timely manner.


Qualification Requirements

Job Requirements:
  • 3-5 years of experience as a NY Licensed security guard or prior Law Enforcement experience.
  • Valid driver's license preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possession of and maintenance of currently valid NYS Security Card Registration required
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Working Knowledge and proficiency of security programs including alarm systems, security cameras and Detect program preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and judgment and poses the ability to clearly and effectively communicate in writing.
  • Trained in first aid, AED and CPR;
  • Emotional control, Objectivity, and Dependability.
  • Ability to critically think, strong attention to detail, and keen observation skills. Additionally, display the ability to implement de-escalation techniques during routine and non-routine interactions with staff, guests, and visitors.
  • Be a team player who works well with others and displays a high level of personal and professional integrity
  • Ability and commitment to work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, overtime and special event.

Physical Requirements:
  • The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Walking, running, standing, and climbing several levels of stairs on a routine basis.
  • Tasks require manual dexterity and the ability to safely use tools (e.g. two-way radio, hand truck, hand tools, keyboarding).
  • Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g. moving temporary barricades, stanchions).
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and balance.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions.
