Summary:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Custodial Services, the Custodian performs duties primarily related to the cleaning of assigned areas in an orderly and attractive manner, ensuring that the highest degree of cleanliness and sanitation is maintained at all times.

Job Description:

Cleaning Functions

  • Submits maintenance work orders to the Facilities Service Center as needed; takes initiative to ensure resident safety and satisfaction is a priority; and interacts with students, staff, faculty, residents and visitors in a friendly manner while also providing customer service.
  • Maintains, dusts and/or wet mops all non-carpeted resilient floors, terrazzo, wood floors, synthetic floors, ceramic, quarry tiled floors in all buildings, daily.
  • Scrubs, strips, reseals, rewaxes and sprays buffs, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Screens discs and tack drags hardwood floors; refinishes by wool applicator or machine sprayer.
  • Maintains, vacuums, shampoos and spot cleans soiled carpeted floors, entrance mats, rugs, drapes and upholstery as directed by the supervisor.
  • Pulls trash from buildings to campus dumpsters, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Operates the following machines: floor sprayer, automatic scrubber buffer, vacuum cleaner, wet/dry vacuum, pressure washer, rotary/steam hand held shampooing machine, window wash pole system and extracting machine.
  • Regularly cleans up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids per blood-borne pathogen cleaning procedures as needed.

Administrative Functions
  • Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage; and cleans and maintains all equipment properly at all times.
  • Reports maintenance service requests within immediate work areas to the supervisor.
  • Assumes responsibilities for supply needs and inventory within immediate work areas.
  • Manages time effectively by completing work within the scheduled time.
  • Properly clocks-in and clocks-out.
  • Submits leave per the Absence Management program.


Safety and Security
  • Ensures proper use and application of custodial chemicals; keeps up to date on OSHA regulations as they relate to cleaning and sanitation measures; and complete annual training as it relates to the Hazardous Communication program.
  • Safely operates custodial equipment including but not limited to vacuum cleaners, squeegees and pressure washers; and maintains knowledge and skill in the operation of floor, carpet, equipment and tools.
  • Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft or abuse.
  • Attends emergencies when necessary.

  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.


Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of one year of work experience with custodial services, floor maintenance, or a related field.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign language.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong ability to explain and demonstrate knowledge related to custodial cleaning and basic floor care.
  • Strong ability to operate the following machines: vacuum cleaner, pressure washer, and rotary steam handheld shampooing machine.
  • Strong ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.


Additional Job Details:
  • The incumbent will be required to work evenings and/or weekends on a regular basis.
  • The incumbent must be physically able to lift or carry seventy (70) pounds of equipment or supplies.
  • The successful candidate must have valid authorization to work in the United States.
  • This position is expected to report to work on campus. However, there may be opportunities for a modified work schedule based on performance and the needs of the department or the University.
