Director of Platform Software Engineering - Consumer Health Platform
Location: Redwood City, CA (you can work from home up to 3x/week)
The company's product is in the realms of healthcare, consumer web, consumer mobile, and enterprise software. The company is reducing the cost and improving the quality of healthcare. It is also enabling people to have access to their healthcare in a convenient and safer way.
The company is based in Redwood City, CA. You could work from home up to 3x/week.
The company reached a $1.5 billion valuation in June 2022, and since then has been having roughly 70% year-over-year growth. It has about 100 employees and 25 engineers, and is rapidly growing.
The company will pay up to $300k in salary plus yearlly bonuses and equity which could be lucrative.
Job Responsibilities:
- The job is not about running a huge team, it's about taking a company from a $2 billion to $20 billion valuation with a small team that got the company to $2 billion.
- Managing the platform team of about 7 engineers. The team includes backend, front end, mobile, and devops engineers. 3.5 backend, 1 devops, 1.5 mobile, 1 full stack, and 1 front end engineer. Scaling the team to 40-50 engineers in the next few years.
- Leading your team to deliver high quality software at a fast pace.
- Your team's work will be about 70% backend engineering.
- The tech stack includes Java, JavaScript, React, and Flutter.
- Your time will be spent roughly as follows:
- 0% hands on coding.
- 70% giving your team technical vision, defining direction, and helping them to figure out what problems to solve and how to solve them.
- 30% assessing your team members' performance, giving feedback, and helping them to grow.
- Caring for your team members' career growth by developing and coaching them according to each individual's passion and strengths.
- Collaborating and coordinating with stakeholders and teams across the company in order to maximize your team's impact and influence.
Qualifications:
- Startup experience. Demonstrated success in leading, growing, and coaching a small engineering team in fast-paced environments.
- At least 10 years of professional engineering experience, with at least 3 years (more would be better) as an accomplished engineering manager.
- Experience with multiple software development stacks across web, mobile, server, and infrastructure.
- Expertise in backend engineering with either Java, Go, or Python.
- Experience managing Engineering Managers.
- Experience managing at least 7 engineers in person (not just remotely), including both backend and front end engineers.
- Excellent technical, communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- Passionate about the craft of building great products.
- Dedication to your teammates and colleagues.
- Strong experience in one of these relevant areas of specialty: backend, full stack, distributed systems, developer productivity, growth, internal tools.
- Not specialized in one of these irrelevant areas: infrastructure, data engineering, machine learning, mobile engineering, big data.
Nice to have:
- Some experience (but not specialized) in front end or mobile engineering.
- Experience managing at least 10 people in person (not just remotely).
- Skill in Java, and/or React.
- Experienced in the ecommerce or SaaS space.
- Experience at multiple companies with different styles of management.
