Compensation:

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Patrol/Enforcement: Monitor employees, visitors and bystanders to the Kansas Capitol Complex, Cedar Crest and other State properties in Shawnee County, to ensure safety and security to the affected areas, employees and citizens. Conduct security screening checks by use of x-ray and metal detecting equipment, while performing the basic functions and duties of a police officer, which includes the enforcement of statutes and administrative rules and regulations of the State of Kansas. Conduct periodic foot patrols, provide directions to visitors, respond to calls for service, assist disabled persons and provide emergency medical service. Utilize Agency computer programs and software; properly completes forms with required, while ensuring the proper use of Agency radio communication system. When assigned, provides security during special assignments/events and provide security to state agencies when requested and approved by the supervisor. Upholds the United States and Kansas Constitutions, Bill of Rights, Kansas Statutes Annotated, city ordinances, departmental rules and regulations and general principals of police work, at all times. Multitasks during emergency/high stress situations. Renders first aid and assistance to citizens when necessary. Provides protection and safety while monitoring security cameras when assigned to specific locations.

Public Contact : Establishes and maintains professional contact with government officials, legislators, dignitaries, state employees, visitors and all other citizens, to uphold the image and reputation of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Utilizes good communication skills when making contact with members of the community, in order to maintain control of each and every situation. Builds and maintains good working relations with other law enforcement agencies.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Licensing & Certification: Valid Unrestricted Driver's License and Certified Law Enforcement Officer credentials in good standing with CPOST

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent, driver's license (corrected vision accepted) Required to successfully complete NIMS ICS 100 &700 Courses within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: One year experience in the criminal justice field. Must be able to speak clearly, listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions; run, walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, get in and out of a vehicle, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, drive vehicle, grasp, key for typing and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age. Must submit to an extensive background investigation. At time of appointment, candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the division of Personnel Services and be required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidate cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime set forth in 18 U.S.C.922(d) (9) and (g) (9).
